We are getting a replacement TV for our Sony KD55A8G OLED TV. Do you like this whole no repair just replacement thing done by the companies?

Thank God the TV was under extended warranty. Otherwise this would not have been possible.

I knew Apple did this. But even sony has started doing that now. Kind of disappointed.

The replacement TV model is Sony XR-55A80L. I believe it is the latest one.

Modern TVs are made up of 5 major components:

Screen
Processor board
Input board (often part of the Processor board)
Power Supply board (some TVs have external power bricks instead)
Speakers.

It's *possible* to replace everything but the screen - manufacturers don't produce replacement screens because the are large, fragile, model-specific, and expense to ship. It's cheaper to just replace the whole TV if the screen is bad, and the screen acts as the frame that everything else is built on.

If you ever tried to do that job, you would very quickly understand why it isn't done.

Power supply boards are the most common part that fails, and those can be replaced. Processor boards rarely fail but those too can be replaced. Speakers almost never fail but can be replaced.

But most people with a broken TV have a damaged screen, and that means a new TV every time. That's just how it is.

Yes, that's the latest one, and it has the updated (LG) screen which has improved brightness and slightly better color, and with Sony's image processing, you will be able to get the most out of it. Hopefully it's in a room where you can control the light...

All appliances you buy really cannot be repaired. Stoves, Refrigerators, washers and dryers. They cost almost as much to have them fixed than to buy a new one. They build these things as cheaply as possible and after 4 or 5 years throw them away and buy a new one. All this stuff ends up in landfills. Gets into the water table and poisons the drinking water.

The screen cannot be repaired anyhow. It is ultrathin technology. Non reparable.

The extended warranty company is paying. Squeezed out much more money than anticipated lol.

Microsoldering is a tricky skill. And to apply it on a screen where there are hundreds pf transistors just over an inch is just near impossible.

The one we are getting seems to be worth 1800 dollars. Our original one was around 2500 to 3000 dollars. It fluctuated there quite a bit.
