How long do you hold on to your phone until it’s time to upgrade?

I hold on to mine for five years or more, provided the device still properly works and is compatible with current or new software.

Depends. I still have the Blackberry phone, as one of my clients still requires support for his old exchange server.

Also, "upgrade" doesn't always mean "better". That's just bullshit marketing, Apple has infected people with.

My phone is currently provided by my employer, and I expect to be upgraded from my iPhone 11 within the next 6 months. I previously had a Samsung Galaxy II that I kept for 7 years.

I had my last phone for five years before I got a new one, and I am intending to make this one lasts as long as the old one

I've gone through three smart phones in my lifetime so far (many dumb phones before it, even when smartphones were sold lol side by side). A short answer: this phone of mine is 1 year 2 months old, the previous phone I had for 1 year. Prior to that I had a hand me down smartphone that I kept for 1 year 6 month or so. I'll have to say, either I'll upgrade every 1-2 years, OR, I'll learn to 'cling' to a smartphone like I used to cling to my dumb phones or until I found a brand I really loved and model. Smart phones are different to me though. I guess time will tell how long I keep versus replace.

@colaman94 Yes, my wife had one that she could not install the latest apps on it. I tried to do an OS upgrade but the hardware would not do it. That is when we got new phones.

@colaman94 I think my wife's phone was 6 or 7 years old. I have been using a flip phone for the last 20 years. I got a deal from Verizon at a former employer. Ten bucks a month. I finally got a smartphone for my new job. It is a Samsung and Run's Android.
