Why would Facebook say I got a message and nothing appears when I check?

Is it a troll that got reported for harassing strangers or some guy who wanted to know my relationship status?

A fellow contact was hacked. Somebody tricked them into responding and clicking and then used the bait to take over their account. It’s a spambot that was flagged for suspicious activity.

That's Facebbook for you! I could tell you stories about all of the janky situations that would occur there. Here's a Facebook classic for ya: They suggest people to make your friends, then when you click to add them, it instantaneously says, "You don't know this person. Only add people you know in real life." & I'm like, dude, you suggested this person to me. Furthermore, how the heck do you know who I know in real life. You're a website!" I literally wrote this question multiple times throughout the years asking them how they know who I know. No response, of course. It wasn't like the person rejected me. There wasn't enough time to. It was an instantaneous Facebook request denial, not even a human one, but yet Facebook suggested these people to me. Oh, I could tell you other janky FB stories, but that one sticks out in my head the most.
