How do you keep your phone number if you order a phone online?

My cell phone was stolen on my last day of vacation in South America and I ordered a new iPhone online today. They told me I could keep my phone number but I don't know how to control what number is linked to the cell phone they give me if I order it online.

There should be a phone number or online service that you can do your activation and they'll ask you about the phone numbers at that time. I've done that quite a bit. All you have to do is tell them who your provider.

The cell phone provider will do it for you. It is not a seamless process.

You'll likely want to call your cell phone provider, and talk to them over the phone. Let them know what you're trying to do, and they'll guide you through the process. You tell them that you want to keep your previous cell phone number. They often call it "porting your phone number". This is usually the process for a cell phone upgrade regardless. So they really shouldn't have any issue doing this. You'll just want to make sure that you don't remove your old phone from your account before they have a chance to move your number over to a new phone. But once that's done, within 24 hours, you can take the old phone off your account.
