Just like anything else in life, only in moderation. Don’t use it in place of getting out amongst people. I believe that in more situations than not, we are a bit safer with having constant access to people and information. We just need to be vigilant about our safety. By having a phone with us all the time we can seek help much faster. Smartphones are a great way for parents to keep track of their children. Without the internet, smartphones would be useless. It is the internet that makes a smartphone, smart. As with anything in life, the internet and social media does have its downsides. A great example of smartphones making us safer would be Google Earth. Street view is a great navigational tool. You can see landmarks and street signs. You can see how lane markings are laid out on a street in an unfamiliar location. Nothing worse than knowing what street to turn onto and you don’t know the proper lane to me in. GPS can send you to the middle of a cotton field. Street view can show you what parts of town are shady and risky.
The internet and social media are great tools if everyone would use them responsibly.

There both positive and negative aspects from going back in time to how we have it today. The internet has been great for all age groups and a great information source. All from youngsters to elderlies can receive and share information like never before and our capability and capacity has grown tremendously. Social media sites like Facebook and instagram has made millions find interests to see, hobbies to enjoy, met old acquaintances and developed new ones from thousands of kilometres away. With that said, obviously there is downside to it as well, especially the younger generation facing a lot of disorders from social media and everything that is shared within. There are less physical activity and less social activities in general.
However, I believe it comes down to schools, universities, and parents to set boundaries as to how much time children should have on social media and set some ground rules. There are so much more to be done but I still see the positiveness outgrows the negativity.
Life would be pretty much the same with or without the internet/social media. The only difference would be the ease at which you could ignore the things you don’t like about the world. The internet doesn’t do anything more than accelerate and magnify the things that were already there, and if you know how to use it properly it can be a pretty nice place without all that bs, but not everyone is taught how to use the internet safely and it’s very much a “learn as you go” situation. Regulation in regards to education about the internet would probably help a lot of people.
Yep. Cheating would go down exponentially and people wouldn't be jealous of what people have and feel the need to be in relationships and marriages as much because they wouldn't see the "happy" couples posting their stuff all the time on these social media sites. The suicide rates would probably go down as well as it's connected to social media in teens especially. They get bullied a lot on these sites. The only upside I see to social media is getting to talk with your family members that you don't get to see very often.

The internet is useful overall. As to individual sites that focus on documenting your life so that your data becomes a commodity to be manipulated and tracked, well nobody has to use those sites. I've never used Facebook, Twitter/X, Instgram, Pinterest, Snapchat, Reddit, MySpace, WatsApp, LinkedIn, or anything else like that which requires personal identification. I watch the occasional YouTube videos from time to time, but I don't have an account to login or post content. The same goes for other video sites like Rumble, TikTok, etc. Most people that use those site are just mindless drones trying to fit in.
Not so much so if it didn't exist but, if people wouldn't spend nearly every waking hour ON it!! For people like me who do a lot of research on music-based things, it's been a huge help and I've discovered tons of stuff I never would've known about had it not been for the net. But, to just mindlessly sift through fucking stupid cat videos all day, every day or whatever else people do that causes them to have their phones surgically attached to their hand so they can stare at it 24/7, it IS a vast wasteland!!
I like vintage stuff—more kitsch than anything valuable—and that stuff was terribly hard to find around here before I had internet. In fact very little of what I’m interested in shows up in this part of the country, so I often have to hit eBay. Even in the early to mid 90s I couldn’t get hold of an 8-Track car stereo in working order around here. Also there’s an endless supply of entertaining videos and repair info; much of the latter is rubbish but I’ve gotten pretty good at separating the wheat from the chaff.
I've lived with both.
The greatest gift the internet has provided is evidence that people aren't that stupid because they lack access to information.
Clearly they're just THAT stupid.
Life was simpler before some prick in Arizona could criticise you for eating bacon instead of chewing a vegan's nuts.Overall? Yes. I will probably miss a few things, but there was a certain magic that was lost after the internet became the norm controlling society instead of a distinct activity in addition to actually socializing and stuff. I hate how everything is becoming a digital or "smart" device too. What happened to the magic of analog or the planned moment to watch something on TV at a certain time and day?
Yes, I'm neither very young or very old and I wouldn't mind society going back to like it was in the 90s with minimal internet presence. Even earlier like the 60s and 70s where TV in people's homes had a handful of channels at most.
Even though at the moment I'm kind of addicted to it, YES, God would it ever be better! Growing up I didn't have my own phone, computer, internet access or even access to a landline, and I can truthfully say I didn't miss ANY of those things and my quality of life was just as good as it is now.
I recently deleted my instagram and facebook again and my self image has been significantly improved. And this is coming from someone who doesn’t use social media that much in the first place, it was effecting me negatively as everything looks perfect on social media. I download it here and there to catch up on some things but deleting it has done wonders for my mental health. I feel like I’d only use it if my business was based on social media or if I needed it to make money.
Social media , yes 👍 absolutely. The internet NO !. I honestly believe the world has been improved by the access and sharing of information in amongst all the benefits of the internet. Conversely I honestly can't appreciate and really benefit of social media
I don't think it is a yes or no question as the internet has many useful applications, facebook a few, the others are trash and should be done away with. This type of communication is a good thing, problem is the evil things have been doing with some it.
In some ways it would be better like people would go out more to socialize rather than staring at screens and it would help with some issues like with depression because social media makes you compare your life with others so you’re just making yourself more sad. One of the big things it would stop is online bullying, some people are really comfortable spewing a lot of shit behind a screen with their identity masked
But it would be bad in other ways like people would not have the ability to get info as quick as it’s now and it would be easier for people in power to control narratives. Granted misinformation could also be spread but at least you can hear what everyone has to say. Also it’s easier to get a lot of people to do something through social media
Yes. The internet has filled peoples heads with bullshit just from the change from 2012 til now the change in people is disgusting. So many people are now so materialistic, self absorbed, don't want to commit, and whore bags. Now there is always idiots egging on other idiots that what they do is right, even though how they behave is wrong or destructive.
I am old enough to have lived almost my whole life without the internet.
There are so many bad things about the internet like porn that children can watch.
People use the internet to play games to hurt other people and say things that have terrible consequences to some young people in the end.
Etc...Non of that stuff is on my phone or or computer… gag is the only “social media” I am on from time to time…
my life is pretty good… don’t need or want that crab brain washing me.
in terms of society… well humans are easily brain washed… so it works to control them.
We are too addicted to it.
It's not like the internet or SM are going to suddenly vanish. I think that both have a healthy place in society — and same goes for AI — but that it's greatly abused by the masses, which casues too many of the negative effects to be way more obvious than their convenient and productive uses….
Sometimes. I mean, the internet does give people like me a way to talk to others and stuff (neurodiverse people unite-especially those who are stuck at home majority of the time). But without it would be nice as people would go out of their house more often. And maybe some places would arrange more fun stuff too.
Generally, yes. Social media, for sure. But there are a few really useful things about the internet and technology that i really like. Access to quality information is one. Maybe the most important for me is GPS. I definitely don’t want to give that up. I have a terrible sense of direction and reading maps while driving is dangerous and stoopid!
The vast majority of social media I can do without, the only one I'd keep is possibly Face book as my family use it to keep in touch. I'd want to keep the internet as a whole as a research tool as its helped me solve some difficult engineering problems.
Not really, lol.
People who think so probably need to cut back themselves. People should take accountability for their own actions and enjoy things in moderation.
yes because it is used to control information and "reprogram users" butt pretending to be like email.
