Some apps just have a delay in showing people online. So they might initially appear offline, but once you log in, it will update them. It happens on my work communication app a dozen times per day. They appear offline, I go to write them a message, and suddenly they're online. Even if I've been logged in. The reverse happens too. Writing them a message, then they go offline before I can hit send. There are no notifications about people actively writing a message either.
No it's not a coincidence. They get a notification
