If you had to buy a new computer would you get a desktop or laptop?

I have a desktop with Windows 10Pro. I did some checking and it can't be updated to Windows 11, unfortunately. So I best be buying a new computer. I have not had good luck with laptops. I have had a few fail on me. But my Lenovo desktop has served me well and I have no complaints. Besides portability, what are the pros and cons of both desktop and laptop?

I switched from a desktop to a laptop twelve years ago and will never go back to a desktop. Laptops are as powerful as a desktop and have as much memory and hard drive plus you can take it everywhere.

I didn't think a laptop could hold as much info on it. Like memory and ram. I mean you are expecting a lot of stuff in such a small space. That produces a lot of heat. Their batteries also seem to fail over time, which is a problem you don't have on a desktop.

My current laptop (Dell 9320 13.4") has a 1 TB SSD hard drive and 32 GB RAM. My battery lasts six hours. The battery is a year old and still works great!

And how many years are you expecting it to last? The more you move it around the more the possibility of damage. I never spilled coffee on a desk top.

I don't move it a lot but I do when I travel. I expect to have it around 4 years which is the same amount of time I would expect to have a desktop. I think technology makes major updates every four years. I also have a four extended warranty with Dell that covers everything including spills.

Dell is probably the main Window's laptops. Every business I have worked for had Dell as their primary laptop. Do a search of Dell XPS laptops

I prefer a desktop for an office setting. I always have mine custom built and it's a far bigger bang for the buck.

I also had a Windows 10 desktop that supposedly couldn't be upgraded to Windows 11, but I found some instructions online for changing the Bios that allowed me to install it. Check with a local computer repair shop to see if they can make it work for you if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself.

You don’t need Windows 11. Don’t let the industry trick you into buying something you don’t need. Applications, games and browsers still run on Windows 7!

If they are anything like Apple, after a couple years they don't update them anymore or make software for them.

I have many, but I prefer laptops. We have 7 computers running 24/7 active computers in this house and it only the desktops that have issues.

Desktops are cheaper for the power they provide. If you don't need it or usually take it when you go out, then a desktop might be the right fit for you.

But if you always use your laptop on the go, then a laptop might be the priority.

Depends what you have already, and what budget you put towards whatever you are looking for is.

Buying a 200 bucks laptop, but expecting it to run like a 2000 bucks laptop, is just foolish.

Get a desktop unless you need it to be portable. Cheaper, easier to upgrade, etc.

by the way, there are ways... to install Windows11 in your desktop PC... even if they tell you it's not possible

I prefer desktops. I do have a laptop I rarely use. I'm at my desk most of the time, so my larger display, I can see more information.

And also because it has become a little slow. I just may have too many files on my desktop, because I have 1 gig internet and here on G@G it can go real slow at times.

Desktop, they are easier to upgrade if you don’t get one completely Intergraded. Separate parts can be changed out as needed.
