Does anyone know a way around the frequent pop-ups that disrupt your reading on articles on the internet?

It's supposed to be progress, but it always turns out to be a study in aggravation. Every page you settle in soaking up news and bam! It covers the whole page with an advertisement that, to this day, hasn't held one bit of enticing information. Only a great sense of being disturbed, which makes me wonder. How dim are the folks over this area that they can not find a more civilized way to earn that dollar.
