Does it bother you that AI will affect women's jobs more than men's?

"A study by the UN's International Labor Organization found that AI is poised
to transform 9.6% of jobs traditionally performed by women, versus 3.5% of
jobs traditionally performed by men, particularly in high-income countries.
The report stated, "We stress that such exposure does not imply the
immediate automation of an entire occupation, but rather the potential for a
large share of its current tasks to be performed using this technology."

I saw on local news how their looking to replace migrant fruit pickers with AI robots. These robots can judge how ripe a fruit is and carefully pick it. It's easy to think only office based jobs are at risk, and that's Probably true for the next few years, but I'll guarantee no matter what you do your boss is asking himself is it more profitable to replace you with AI.

Yesterday I went to a small shop and had to wait at least 5 minutes at the self service checkout for an assistant turn up to confirm my age to buy alcohol. We've a bakery which is entirely self service, no visible staff. Only a matter of time before the shelf stacking part is automated. Even the deliveries are on the verge of being driven there by driverless vans from workerless food factories.

make no sense at all it's more men job that are going to be affected AI is not gonna serve children food, cut bread, or clean the toilet alone or even clean children wound when they fall down...

Combined with robotics, drones, autonomous vehicles, IoT, etc., AI can replace such jobs

Not a whole lot to be honest. They've had a good run in the nation's call centers. And become a bit snotty.

The numbers given seem a bit under cooked. I have seen much larger numbers with call centers being entirely AI.

The girls might have to take up cooking and cleaning again.

The subtext I was hinting at is there is likely a serious degree of social impact. Somewhat like but faster than manufacturing jobs going to China.

This time though professional jobs will be more in the line of fire. Lawyers and accountants for example could be AI'ed pretty well. Remote surgery is already being done and just needs the AI component. You probably do want a human GP to look at your nasty rash though.

The gender difference is a concern but I am much more concerned about the deployment of AI throughout our culture, leading to even more degradation of social skills for young people.

No more or less than automation in manufacturing and construction replacing men for the last several decades bothered me. It didn’t seem to bother anyone else though. Are we all up in arms now? Cuz women are at risk? Ell oh ell!

I do not see how. Women traditionally are healthcare providers and those jobs do not translate well into an AI model

That’s not entirely true. Some surgeries are being done with automation and have been for years. AI has been tested in diagnosis recently and is found to have significantly improved success rates over human doctors and nurses.
Once machines with very fine motor controls like those in surgical centers are more affordable and mobile, they will be able to render humans obsolete in healthcare.

@sage2021 That's what the report says. AI may make some jobs obsolete, or may reduce the things a human does in the job, which could reduce the pay for the job.

I wonder what jobs that are traditionally "feminine" they are talking about. Two I think of are teaching and nursing, and I don't see how AI would fill those roles.

The remote learning model that was used during covid could easily be adapted to AI. Of course the final product was a totally failure with kids unable to pass standardized tests but it would save money and that s what is more important.

Industrialisation took mostly men's jobs, and continues to. Every technology that does the work of ten men in half the time it takes one to do his morning's labours takes the jobs of nine men.
