9 moThe US government took over banks in 2008/09. They took stock positions in the auto industries as well. Free market capitalism is a tool, not an end to itself. It fosters freedom for the individual, but it is not the sole purpose of government. Buying into Nvidia is necessary because it is better than the state capitalism of China while giving the government (taxpayer) a return on future profitability. The government already provides between 75-90% of the revenue for defense contractors such as Lockheed, so there is little, appreciable diference. All the anti-USA stuff is nice from the comfort of our homes on a keyboard, but the world will NEVER see a benign hegemon as gracious and outward looking as the US ever again. Imagine Communist China winning the chip war which leads to a win in the AI war... LOLOLOL you think the US is a surveillance state? We are pikers compared to Communists and globalists. We already see crackdowns on freedom and speech in the UK, Germany and elsewhere. Most of the world will be begging for the US to reassert is leadership - they already are in Ukraine.
As a US citizen, I can say that most US adults have no idea of the ramifications either way. But it will have less of a negative impact on individual freedom and Constitutional order than cancel culture, or surveilling US citizens. We already did it with US Steel (1950's), and the bank bailouts (2008/9). The result was the stock was bought back by the private sector with a profit for the taxpayer. same thing will happen here.

9 moThe local ice rink went bankrupt. It sat empty for a week when I contacted the city to suggest the city make an investment in it for the community. And they did. That is gov buying into something that directly supports the community. And it is doing better than when privately owned.

9 mo"Conservatives" and MAGA are showing us what they really are. They say they want small govamint. They say they hate Communism and love Capitalism.
But what is Capitalism? An economic system where private individuals or organizations own the means of production, rather than the state (government), and operate them for profit.
And what is Communism? The state (government) owns major resources and property, the means of production, rather than private individuals or corporations.
And what are Conservatives and MAGA doing as soon as they grab power? They are taking control of the means of production away from the private sector and nationalizing corporations. Straight out of the Soviet, Nazi, Cuban, and Venezuelan playbook. Because the truth is none of those were Communist. They were all fascist dictatorships. And so is the USA now. Complete with a centrally planned and owned economy.Watch the MAGA filth break their tiny brains trying to turn this into anything other than the fascist power grab it is.

Well common sense tells me that if the government is doing that, then all the elected officials are doing that.
With AI taken Uber the world, I'm sure the probably have put themselves in a Vada government positions.
They are better to handle it faster to handle it than a regular person, but before long. American people are not gonna have a job. Somebody's gonna have to support them so so it's one thing that the government should do in it to make. Money, but we all know how it's been going on for years. That's just about every federal elected officis. Breaking with trade in the stock market00 Reply

It depends.
There are bailouts, like we saw during the economic crash, which are sometimes necessary. If you take the aerospace industry for example, there used to be 15+ major US aircraft manufacturers, but they all either stopped making aircraft, or were absorbed into one of just two huge corporations - Lockheed-Martin and Boeing - which are now both "too big to (be allowed to) fail". If Boeing were to go bust, then thousands of jobs would be lost, the US would be unable to acquire military aircraft to "defend itself", US airlines would be forced to buy European (Airbus) aircraft, etc.
There's also re-nationalization (de-privatization), where companies providing services that should never have been privatized in the first place - healthcare, water, energy, railways, telecoms, prisons, etc - are bought out by the government. Again, this is a good thing.
What's not so good, would be governments investing in companies that don't need help. Obviouly that leads to all sorts of accusations of corruption and anti-competitive behaviour.00 Reply
9 moMilitary contractors I could sorta understand, but I definitely do not want the US government controlling the companies involved in any sort of communications. There is now way to convince me that they won't use that power to quench free speech.

9 moNot sure what you mean by buying stakes.
As far as I know, all the states do it. Or at least the state pension funds do. The federal pension fund (Social Security) does not invest in the stock market or anything else. They loan money to the government (loan money to itself) at very low rates. They could do much better with investments - but that also means the general funds do much worse.
I'm (conditionally) not against the feds investing in public companies. It would sure beat the return they get on other investments. I just don't trust the feds to do it right.
"Iโm 100% sure they will go after Spacex and starlink too. "
No they won't, for multiple reasons. First of all, neither SpaceX nor Starlink are public companies. That means the feds can't invest in them unless the companies allow them to. Second, those companies are small fry for the amount of money the feds would invest.00 Reply@Kelly6 Kelly, keep in mind that most of the companies like Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, and others have a connection to the Government as they all employ prior Military - ex-military personnel, that are familiar with the systems they build for the Fed. I worked for Lockheed - or rather Ford Aerospace which was acquired by Lockheed. Also worked for Boeing, who is also a large government contractor, so they are already operating hand-in-glove together.

Gifted woman? Well thank you.
But what I say or think about government is what will happen or effect in future.
Yes government is government just as spoon is spoon, no denying in that.
But ownership in companies which will have strong hand in future tech and wars is scary and dangerous.
US is running its economy just as Rome was doing, which canโt last forever.
This method is to run countyโs economy on war profit.
Unless US changes its economy method.
I have no problem with them assisting but I don't think taking a share is a great idea unless the company is seen as of Incredible National importance , for example with National security.
For it they took a massive stake it could potentially be sold , but you want to approve the purchaser for example.
So in some cases necessary.10 Reply- 623 opinions shared on Technology & Internet topic.
9 moIt's been done before, typically as a form of bailout. Chrysler in the 1970s is a good example of the federal government giving the company money.
Intel is a little different though, and I really don't support the feds buying a piece of the company. Give Intel a loan is preferred, one that Intel pays back.

9 moThis is socialism and Bernie Sanders approved. A bailout is one thing but government ownership of private business undermines the free market economy. Governments shouldn't be competing with private business.
That being said, I shorted Intel stock today because 75% of their business is overseas and with Trumps meddling and how unpopular he is around the world, that stock will tank eventually.
