Corporate stock buybacks are reprehensible and deserve to be taxed at a much higher rate, perhaps as much as 50%. This would provide an incentive for companies to focus on creating jobs and investing in their workers, rather than just enriching their executives and shareholders.

It's simple economics: stock buybacks enrich the shareholders and executives of the company, while leaving laid-off workers with nothing. These workers are the ones who actually create value for the company, and they should be treated with respect and dignity. Other…. as in all stock purchases should be taxed. There are firms that make 15,000 transactions that are day trades using AI software. Even though it’s not fair to us civilian day traders, tech is tech. Can’t say they’re wrong to use.

Same for stock buybacks. Tax the transaction perhaps. BUT do not use govt funds for stock buyback. Which is what happened to the tarp funds in 2008.

That's another good point. It's called a Robin Hood tax. Personally, I think forcing buyers to hold on to stocks for a period of time would also encourage trading on the basis of an understanding of the entity you're buying into, not just which way the stock is trending this minute (or centisecond).

Many things were illegal before 1982 and never should have been.

To infringe upon a man or companies right you have to have both the legitimate power and a good reason. A state might have the legitimate power but I can't imagine a good reason to keep a company from offering it's stock holders money for their own stock. If you can sell it, it follows you should be able to buy it. Commerce must be a 2 way street.

The only question is whether or not your using the stock holders own money to buy their stock from them, which is thief.
But for that same reason I don't really recognize the idea of a company owning itself either.

In the real world if a someone in a position of knowledge/power offers to pay more money for something, you should judge YOUR choice to buy more or sell on the same basis you originally choose to buy your stock in the company they control.

Your assessing their judgement and intentions and if your not willing to make that gamble you should NOT be in the stock market.
