Does anyone else shut off and disconnect their technology with hard lighting storms?

Or lighting in general, new HDD and now I'm paranoid, I didn't used to do it much but I think a power outage is what fried my disk last time considering it started acting up after the outage, so now I just do not risk it 🫠

There is good reason too. A lot of power boards include surge arrestors but they are fairly minimal and you don't know if they have successfully managed 20 surges before but are now burnt out because they are sacrificial protection.

I've invested in a Thor surge arrestor as it reacts very fast and is non sacrificial. Even so I think it is more of a feel good decision on my part even though it indicates actuation.

I am more concerned with power surges when there is an power outage for maintenance. A company I worked for had instruments on a long country power line and there was always a dead instrument after a power outage.

If lightning is close, I will do as you do and always disconnect everything on a power outage and just rely on battery.

My grandparents did, back in the day when TV was still received through an antenna on the roof. For your computer equipment you could just buy a surge protected power bar.

When at home my dad used to disconnect the aerial to the tv, and he would tell us to do so too.

With my own place now I don't disconnect the aerial, but I unplug the sockets every night, but to save energy.

But you should worry about lighting. Don't stand near trees in a thunderstorm, even if there isn't a direct hit, it can spread through the ground, and is a common cause of lighting casualties.

I bought a device with a number of sockets, and it is supposed to prevent outages. It only cost a couple of dollars.

Nope. My home is properly grounded and there is a backup power system in place. Power rocks on when the world is dark around me.
