Are Tesla's considered real cars or just electric toys?

I always think cars got to be gas powered to be considered a car. But electric cars seem more like a child's toy then a real car.

To be honest, I consider the Tesla cars to be something in between. They are not real cars, since they are not exactly reliable (though they might be somewhat more reliable than the European electric competition). Their range is laughable for any trip outside of the city (there is a horribly high risk of running out of energy in the middle of nowhere, and that would be a big problem). On the other hand, they are not exactly toys, since there are some use cases when they fulfill the functionality of actual cars. If You have a charger both at home and at work, You might be fine. That is unless You find out the other reason why they are not toys - toys are supposed to be safe to use, and the BEVs are prone to randomly catching fire.

why would a car only be considered a car because it has gas power. before gas powered cars there were actually steam powered cars in the 1850s. the first electric powered cars are nearly 100 years old.

the definition of a car is not based on the type of engine powering it but that it is self propelled (has an engine/motor) and has four wheels

It’s a real car, but to me it’s more like a novelty that isn’t practical in parts of the country since there isn’t charging stations everywhere there’s a gas station and charging takes a lot longer. They’re definitely good as a commuter car and in large cities where you’re not doing any long distance and have plenty of access to charging

On the dragstrip you're gonna think otherwise when the electric car blows you away with a few lengths in under 5 seconds. :D The electric car doesn't have a transmission - not in the traditional sense, at least. It has only "forward", "neutral" and "reverse". In forward it's just pure torque, no gear shifting, no loss of power or pauses between gears.

I LOVE the sound of an American V8 muscle but electric cars have their advantages that make the gasoline engine look like the toy you're talking about.

OK, that's on a drag strip, provided they do not randomly catch fire, which seems to be the case with all BEVs. Now let's compare the ranges and refuelling/charging times. The BEVs are pretty much short-distance only, that's why they appear to be toys.

Imagine two types of EV owners:
• one who doesn't even know how to turn the PC ON
• someone like me who doesn't do anything without customizations and personal optimizations.

Take a wild guess whose EV car's gonna last the longest on the highway... :D

@Valso As long as the inherent design flaw of BEVs, the susceptibilty to randomly catching fire, does not pop up, Your EV will last the longest. Though if it was an FCEV instead of a BEV, it would last much longer (similarly to an ICE vehicle), given the elimination of the randomized mobile crematorium feature.

@CalmUntilAbused The combustion engine is more likely to catch fire bc there's flammable fuel, an actual burning process and even slightest leakage from the fuel tank (or natural gas tank) could spark an explosion the size of a Hollywood action. Especially if the owner is a smoker...

@Valso That's a big overestimation. Even if it happens, though, the fire will not instantly spread all over the vehicle, like in the case of the BEVs. Also, the BEVs literally catch fire randomly (with very minor fende benders being significant catalysts), which only happened to a few ICE cars, all of which were built by the French, if I remember correctly.

I still haven't seen a truly viable "electric" car. Cars have better acceleration with electric motors. Once they reach speed, gas engines provide much better economy of use. An acceptable use would be 12-volt booster motor/generators for each axle for coming off the line. Once up to speed, the gas engine takes over, and the motors go into generator mode to keep the batteries charged. Haven't seen anything like this yet, though.

In the long run, EVs produce more waste and pollution than gas vehicles. By the time tons of ore are refined into a few pounds of batteries, the windmill blades on wind farms can't be recycled and end up in a landfill, while it seems not, the better way to go is a gas-vehicle. Generating plants for peak times run on fossil fuels anyway, and there is always the inherent loss of energy when the electricity is transmitted from place to place one the grid.

Electric cars make far more sense than gas powered cars for the general population. Think of everything that is involved is merely creating fuel for them, and the pollution they produce. Tesla's are shit electric cars for the money. As per usual, China leads the way with the best EV's.

They are real cars, and in much of the world most cars sold are electric. It will happen in the US over the next ten years or so.

No they won’t. Americans don’t want them. Besides they’re worse for the environment because of rare earth mining plus the fact they’re disposable. Once the batteries go it isn’t cost effective to replace them
