Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I asked AI:
Yeah—there’s a lot of truth to that, but it’s a bit more nuanced than the headline suggests.
People often say AI is growing “exponentially” because several things have been improving at once:
Compute power (more and better GPUs)
Data availability
Algorithmic breakthroughs (like transformers)
A famous example is the scaling trends described by OpenAI and others—when you increase model size, data, and compute together, performance tends to improve in a very predictable (and sometimes rapid) way.
That said, it’s not a perfect exponential curve forever. In reality:
Progress comes in bursts, not a smooth curve
There are bottlenecks (energy, data quality, costs)
Some improvements are incremental, not dramatic leaps
A better way to think about it is:
AI development has periods of exponential-feeling acceleration, especially when a new breakthrough unlocks progress.
Right now, we’re in one of those acceleration phases—similar to what happened after the rise of deep learning around 2012, and again with large language models in the 2020s.
If you’re curious, there’s a deeper question behind this:
Do you mean exponential in terms of capabilities, impact on society, or speed of innovation? Those can actually grow very differently.
I see it destroying creativity in music more than anything else. However, I ignore ALL AI in every other context.
I think Harry Styles is AI.
Every technology goes through phases. Rudimentary initially, commercial use in high value areas, consumer use followed by a flowering period where it becomes ubiquitous followed by a mature stage of gradual improvement.
So far AI, can't past the Turing test. So it is not that advanced. When I want the robot, instead of a person, on the inquiry line it is starting to get there. If I can't tell that is an
AI voice. At this point AI gets confused with lives and lifes for example and it jars.
AI is a long way off from general intelligence.
Someone on the internet: "AI is already smarter than Elon Musk"
The AI:
Well, sometimes it hits the nail on the head:
"User Gary Koepnick asked the AI which person spreads the most information on Twitter/X—and the service did not hesitate in pointing a finger at its creator.
“Based on various analyses, social media sentiment, and reports, Elon Musk has been identified as one of the most significant spreaders of misinformation on X since he acquired the platform,” it wrote, later adding “Musk has made numerous posts that have been criticized for promoting or endorsing misinformation, especially related to political events, elections, health issues like COVID-19, and conspiracy theories. His endorsements or interactions with content from controversial figures or accounts with a history of spreading misinformation have also contributed to this perception.”
The AI also pointed out that because of Musk’s large number of followers and high visibility, any misinformation he posts is immediately amplified and gains legitimacy among his followers."

AI will get us but not as people fear. As companies and government departments turn more and more to AI trusting it more and more it will eventually screw up. Think about it, if one employee screws up then there isn't much damage and it's usually easily fixed. But if you've an AI program doing the work of a hundred people that error is multiplied 100 fold. Worse still you've laid off everyone who could have spotted the mistake.
Poppy's just being a comedian 🫣🤭
@NicholasofAustralia ,
No she's not. Think about it. An AI can screw up a lot of decisions really fast. And humans ability to check the accuracy / sanity of an AI is falling further behind by the day.
Now take into account the natural laziness of 75% of the population and an IQ below 100 for half of the population. How long is it before humanity becomes so dependent on AI that they trust it implicitly and forget how to do simple things for themselves. A generation? 2 generations?
Meanwhile I'd feel safe saying that every government on Earth has essentially zero legislation addressing the use of AI. Negligence, legal liability, criminality, safeguards... none of it is being addressed.
If you think this is a joke you're part of the problem.
To put in perspective, in the UK thousands turned up to a non existant firework display thanks to AI. In another case people flocked to a shallow sandy beach to see the whales and sharks. At Christmas several people got into difficulty swimming because AI messed up the tides, 2 died because they trusted AI
@purplepoppy sometimes I wonder if all this times 😜💭 poppy's been an AI or a spammer / troller 🧌 lol : she barely if not for a few years now hasn't replied to any comment @ or inbox message - shrug 😅 must be my humble pie personality 🥧
What good is being afraid. It is an exciting time to be alive. We are living at a moment in mankind's existence that a creation of our own is going to reach singularity. We are all in the same boat so why be afraid. It will definitely change the world we and our children live in. So I say eyes wide open let's see where we go.
Up load me first.
Develop is good not reason to fear. Obviously we should not erase AI module just add new ones. Also remember famous robotics rules in asimov? What if that comes in conflict with programming? My desk calculator might do reasoning 'i was programmed to calculate math so if my user will switch me off i can't obey my program. But user will switch on later not delete it.
We aren't there yet but I wouldn't rule it out. Tech is advancing far quicker then the earth warms. I am really hoping we can have a symbiotic relationship with AI where we both need one another enough to not push the red button. I think I could be an excellent battery or maybe even a life coach and teach little robots it doesn't matter how tall you are when she doesn't like you it matters that you move on to find another robot that does..
🤣 will ai get us before climate change does?🤣
The climate is always changing... and its called winter, spring, summer and fall.
Im thinking ai was tested and experimented on before people we were told. Things are always put there far after they were invented. I still remember the 3d tv from the 90s my dad told me about.
Yeah, AI devs use AI to code, which boosts speed and efficiency. It’s a cycle where good models create better ones. Many jobs are dead now, but I expect things to level off eventually.
@goaded I don’t think the predictions for 2026 and beyond will end up like the ones people made back in 1982. Back then it all sounded pretty utopian. Now we actually have real data and working examples of AI.
Take software, for example. The old role where people just sit and write code all day is already changing. More and more the job is about designing systems and reviewing or guiding code that AI generates.
So it wouldn’t be surprising if a lot of white-collar jobs end up with fewer positions or shorter working hours in the future.

It can be a help, I expect, but you still need skills to recognise when it's going wrong. There's something similar with actual non-AI people who spend their time looking up how to do things on stackoverflow and sticking them together in the hopes that it will work.
Thanks for the link, it's interesting. A few lines in: "hiring of younger workers has slowed in exposed occupations" is worrying, it implies that there will be fewer people with the skills to avoid mistakes in the future.
I'd trust an AI to highlight potential cancer cells in a biopsy, for example, but not to diagnose and treat me.
If only we could find a substance somewhere in the universe that is smarter than Donald Trump... ah, well...
Trump is a stable genius.
LOL, you are more intelligent than the grifter Elon.
Also, No, AI is more or less where it was 5 years ago.
Yes I know at first I was able to see it was IA very easily but as Time went I was not able to it got better and better
Scared of what exactly though, what do you think the main areas to be afraid of and why?
It does at first till it eventually will stagnate and then virtually flat line. Cause that's what every new technological advancement looks like.
"It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins." — 2 Maccabees 12:46
AI to me is just Photoshop / suggestion bot on coffee. It's still the same duck, still quacks - its a duck 🦆 and only a duck
Nah climate change is still the biggest existential threat to us along with war and disease
Yea is quiet obvious.
Yep. Its turning into terminator
