What do you think of the Parthenon in Athens?

Takes me back; makes me think of the birth of western democracy. Takes me back to open forums & public debate. Takes me back to a time & place where wise men actually existed.

What I wouldn't give to speak with men the likes of Archimedes, Socrates, Pythagoras, Aristotle (who was Alexander the Greats teacher by the way) & many others. The battle at Marathon saved western civilization.

Outnumbered 2-1 coupled with a force march back to Athens, the dispatch literally fell over & died after shouting "NIKE" (victory in Greek). The distance between Marathon & Athens is 26 miles.

The Persians must of been FURIOUS when they saw the same men that just beat them awaiting them at Athens, they sailed right by. These events was the inspiration for the Olympics. Seeing this place reminds me of all of this & more.

If my memory serves there is a relief carved all over the Parthenon in honor of these events I spoke of. I'll make that journey someday:)

I had the opportunity to visit it and I was really impressed by the architecture and how it looked in the times it was still standing in all its glory.

The new Parthenon museum at the foot of the hill (black glass building) is a very interesting place to look at how the place may have looked over 2,000 years ago.

There is a very interesting path that leads from Plaka to the Parthenon. If you have the opportunity, take that path rather than the regular road. It is a little steep at times but you have an excellent view of the promontory on which the Parthenon is built.

On my visit, much of the structure was being restored and was enclosed in scaffolding (my usual luck), even so, the visit was worthwhile.
