Huge Roman villa found in Wales dubbed ‘Port Talbot’s Pompeii’... Your thoughts?

The buried remains of the largest Roman villa ever found in Wales have been detected beneath parkland on the south coast, in an “amazing” discovery that archaeologists have described as “Port Talbot’s Pompeii”.

The remains were discovered when a team was assembled to investigate the pre-industrial heritage of Margam Park, on the edge of Port Talbot, and they “struck gold” when geophysical surveys revealed the footprint of an unexpectedly large Roman villa complex.

It's interesting because most roman villas are in southeast England. Apart from the odd places like Caerleon, Wales doesn't have a great deal of roman archaeology, and villas are pretty non-existent.

But I think comparing one villa to pompeii is a bit of a stretch.

The location of the site, in an ancient deer park, also means that the team expect a high level of preservation: the area has never been used for agriculture, so has never been ploughed.

There was a fort discovered west of their in Pembrokeshire last year. There has long been local rumours of one past down the generations but there had never been any evidence that the Romans had settled so far west. There's likely a lot of undiscovered stuff hidden in wales
