Boat rides? Is it a thing that people who arrange boat rides look for shaded areas or have you ever gotten sunburnt out on the ocean?

This is a personal question... not looking for general answers

It so happens that ''our'' company builds and built (among others) boats for group tours.
The boat owners - our customers - do care about sun protecting their customers, and so do I when I draw up the designs.
However - the typical ''guest'' on such tours is a mindless landlubber - if they ignore obvious health precautions - then no one can be blamed other than THEM.

Privately, my last sunburn had been some 10 years back on a sailboat race in the tropics. We won that race - so it was worth it :D

Sunlight at sea is tricky: it not only comes from top, but also is reflected.

Ahh right... and that's cool. So like if they move from under the roof and stay unprotectd for an hour... hmm for that reflection thing... i wonder how that works.. i know glare/reflection off the water or snow can hurt the yes.. but does the reflection ACTUALLY send sunlight that can burn you over time... hmmm

The reflected light adds (nowadays there are even solar panels that are double sided), but the main threat comes from direct light.
If we want a 100% protection, then we must stay at home in the basement, unfortunately :)
Very common are canvas sunshades, or hard top roofs to keep the sun off you. There are also window materials (i. e. deck house cabins) that have a UV filter.
But personal 'precaution still is recommendable: A cap or hat with a brim, not too short clothing, avoiding the sunniest part of the day; and a sun blocker if you want.

Thanks for sharing. Lol a bit of sun can be beneficial... I'm not going to any basement, if anything I'd limit my time outdoors in direct sun.

I've gotten some nasty sunburns while sport fishing. Of course, drinking and fishing go hand and hand so that you don't notice, but at the end of the day, the pain catches up with you.

Put sunscreen on your face and hands, and wear a long sleeve shirt, long pants, sunglasses and a big floppy hat. Better to be hot than burnt to a crisp.

Lots and lots of sunblock along with soft cotton long sleeve shirts and pants. Sunburn is no fun.

Oh it's definitely been out on the ocean and gotten sunburned. You know what when you're in the middle of the ocean there's no trees or shade. But I've also been on a boat on a lake and we definitely looked for shelter from the sun

I've got some bad sunburns from being out on a boat in the ocean. The sun can reflect up off the water. If there's wind you don't feel the heat but you're getting burnt.
