Geography Question #5 - How many standard TIME ZONES are there, and how many places deviate from their standard zone?

Day #5 (Thursday) of this week's geography questions... as requested by G@G members.

Before standard time zones were established in the 1800s, every location had its own time, typically based on the position of the sun (sun overhead was noon). Now, we have standard time zones (and even a global time standard, UTC), though some places deviate from what their standard zone should be.

So let's ask "How many standard time zones are there, and how many places deviate from their standard zone?"

BONUS: What country has the most time zones?

Please don't cheat by looking it up. Make your best guess.

Here's a BONUS question HINT. Both Russia and the United States have 11 time zones each, and they are in second place. There is one country with more than 11 time zones.

There are 24 time zones all over the world, in accordance to each hour of the day.

Now I don't know about the deviations, it's a really difficult questions.

I imagine the country with the most time zones, has a large number of national territories scattered all over the world, so either UK or France?

I would say 24 hours in a day so there should be 24 time zones.

Because each time zone represents approximately 15 degrees latitude, and since the earth is, more or less round- 360 degrees divided by 15 allows 24 time zones.

How many locations deviates from their assigned zones? I have no idea.

I would imagine that Russia has the most zones.

1. There should be 24 time zones.

2. I have no idea how many places follow a time different from their time zone.

3. The country with the most time zones should be Russia, if we are talking about a contiguous country.

G@G won't let me post another update so here are the answers...

Most got the correct number of standard time zones... 24, one for each hour of the day, every 15 degrees of longitude, more or less... the lines aren't straight, they tend to follow country borders.

No one got the number of deviations, which is 13, for example India time zones differ from the standard time zones by 30 minutes.

BONUS Answer: France has 12 time zones; all of its overseas departments are part of France. US and Russia each have 11 zones.

24 one for each our of the day. I know China belongs in 3 of them, but doesn't follow that and has one time zone
