What’s it like to go wilderness camping?

I’ve been invited to join my cousins and several other girls (some older) to go wilderness camping this summer. Never been camping before. It sounds like fun but also kinda scary. What should I expect and prepare for? What things should I absolutely bring? All I’ve been told so far is we’ll be near a lake and my cousin (who’s also never done this before) will be my buddy. What does that mean?

What kind of accommodations? Camper? Cabin? Tent?

I've only been tent camping once and I way over packed and ended up getting the stink eye from my husband when he couldn't fit it all back in his truck. 🤣 I like the outdoors but tent camping and being one with nature while sleeping in the midst of all the things that creep in the night is not for me.

Cabin camping is great fun, tho! Things you might bring - your regular toiletries, sunscreen, bug repellent, tick repellent, flashlight, stuff for smores, good walking shoes and socks - especially if you're gonna hit the trails.

I'd also say - maybe a water type shoe. We went hiking through a lower dells that had waterfalls and a shallow current of water flowing through. I just had gym shoes on - so I took them off and went barefoot but eventually it got too rocky for that and I ended up having to put my gym shoes back on.

I'm guessing the weather will be warm and you'll probably pack mostly summer clothes. I'd also pack at least one pair of jeans and a hoodie.

You’ll be roughing it so only go with experienced campers. A lot depends on the location and the temperature. Summers can be hot. Def bring sunscreen since you’ll spend most days in shorts, swimsuits, or less if it’s all girls. Bug spray. Wipes. Bar soap for lake bathing. Be prepared for rain and bugs. The buddy system is a safety practice bc you do everything together…. even that, which takes some getting used to. It’s freaky at first but in the end it’s all natural and fun. It can be very zen. Expect to be uncomfortable. Relish it. Don't be prissy "Ew there's a bug!" or you're going to hate every moment of it. You'll see and hear on a level you won't in society. It's dumb to partner you up with your cousin who hasn't done it before though. Hope you'll at least be near people with experience. I did a little over a week with just my knife one time. Made good friends with a squirrel. Shared some fish with him for breakfast the last two days. Had a lot of fun. I suspect since you're only 15 there will be adults there. You'll enjoy it. Just listen to what they say. "Don't wander from the fire" isn't just because they are trying to be nosy what you're doing, it's because it keeps the bears away (if you're in bear country). Jaguars too, incidentally.

I'd suggest going to a camp site the first time just to get the hang of it. As for wild camping just use common and you'll be safe. If your doing it where you shouldn't be, pitch up where you won't be noticed and use a dull coloured tent.

@catsmeow0912 i go on wilderness nude camping near a fresh water lake, it’s quite fun and relaxing. we do lot of fishing for food, and play games

As opposed to city camping? Are you going car camping or backpacking? Because that makes a huge difference on what to bring.
