Depends on the countries.

If you are a EU citizen you can travel within all EU countries with your basic standard ID.

Within other countries you need a passport and maybe even a visa.

"Real ID" is a new American thing, which requires you to have extra documentation to make your basic driver's license a more official ID good for domestic travel. I believe you may also use it to go to Canada, but not sure about Mexico and you definitely cannot use it outside of the continent for travel. A passport is required for that.

If you go overseas, then yes you do need a passport. The "Real ID" is good for air travel in the US. Not sure about Canada or Mexico, so you better check on that.

If you're travelling overseas you need a passport. If it's a domestic flight I believe you can just use your ID.

It depends countries agreement. In Europe, no need passport but some countries does not recognize read ID of border governments
