Is Columbia unsafe to visit as a American tourist?

I made a friend through my work friend and we both started liking each other and want to see each other in person. She lives in Venezuela though which my friend who lived there until a couple years ago said it’s extremely unsafe. Then suggested Columbia because she’s close to that country. But anyone that has visited there recently. Is it unsafe?

Venezuela has improved a lot in the last 18 months or so. I am guessing all in all Colombia might still be a bit safer. Just don’t stand out as a clueless American in a Hawaiian shirt and baseball cap. I would read the latest travel advice/warnings and watch YouTube travel videos about the area where you want to meet.

I think it's on Level 3 again, "Reconsider All Travel", though I think Old Cartagena is still safe. But I wouldn't recommend going anywhere else

Yea I told her about my plan and she said all Latin countries propose a decent level of danger but it’s all about being smart and safe. But she lived there for like 6 years so she knows the spots to go luckily
