I’ve yet been to a better state. Sure most of Switzerland was better, but in the US?
California is a shithole. It’s the worst state in America. It’s rank 48 of 50 when it comes to freedom in the USA. It has the second highest unemployment rate and the most overall unemployed residents.
It has the worst air pollution of any state in America.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/W4J5TI_CzrY
The place is literally a dump...It’s filled with homelessness and illegal aliens…
https://www.youtube.com/embed/qSn-2jicPHY
https://www.youtube.com/embed/URfCwT3UQy4
Crime is out of control…When you start evaluating California from a quality of life point of view it ranks almost dead last in every criteria when compared to other states. It’s no wonder that they are losing residents faster than any other state in America. If you actually like California, you’re setting the bar pretty low.

+1 yNo, you're right. I mean, there are always people who have subjective preferences for other states because they like being really cold and buried in snow, or sweltering hot. It's not the #1 top ranking in many things besides economy, but overall the metrics are good for education, safety, public health, social welfare, population density, earning potential and overall infrastructure, and ranks positively on most.
Aside from human factors, the state itself is just gorgeous. Beautiful coastline, tons of resources, lots of wild areas, natural parks, forests, mountains, rivers, lakes, the works. You can go to the beach one day, go snowboarding the next. It's perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Some other great states are HI, OR, FL, MT, CO, UT, VT, ME. Really most of the states have at least a few good things about them, but some are so miserable on 90% of factors I wouldn't want to live there or even visit other than very briefly.
A lot of people of course are polarized against CA due to their politics, which is fine. No one wants them here, anyway.

They are sick of stepping in San Francisco street chocolate too. Many people are relocating to Texas or Florida. They are more citizen friendly

- +1 y
@handsomelad70 low taxes, low crime, good public schools, very few illegal aliens and a booming economy. What's not to like. The residents are afraid all the transplants from NY and NJ will bring their stupid ideas with them and ruin the place
+1 yIt's very subjective. What one person likes might be very different than what another likes.
I've been in almost every state, most of them multiple times. I've lived in 10 states, including California. There is a reason why I no longer live there. In my opinion MOST states are better than California. Of the 10 I've lived in, I'd say that 4 were worse than California, and 5 were better.
The problems with California:
A really crappy job market
Very high cost of housing
Crazy politics (which have gotten a lot worse since I lived there)
Highly regulated
High taxes
Too damn crowded (It would be more accurate to say the population is highly concentrated in a few places)
Traffic
Everyone is always in such a damn hurry (nobody can sit still in California)
The only big plus of California is the natural beauty, but there are plenty of other states that are just as nice or nicer.00 Reply
+1 yI consider California one of the worst states.
I don't know how you mean your comment.
Now, I'll agree that weather wise, scenery, view, climate, beauty and stuff California is wonderful.
But, due to the far left leadership, the over taxation, regulations, bans and restrictions, the rampant homelessness and crime, how psycho places like San Fransisco are, the rampant illegal immigration... California has turned in to a shithole. It is 100% the fault of evil, moronic leadership over the last 30-40 years.
If California and law abiding, moral, strong leaders over the last 40 plus years it would probably still be a great place.

Lol you obviously haven't visited West Virginia or South Carolina.
- +1 y
@Simslover92 actually I've been to both. I found them to be quite lovely. At least the places I went.
- +1 y
Well live in South Carolina for over 10 years. You will change your mind. Everything is slow down here. It's nothing progressive about either states. But moreso South Carolina. I've only visited West VA so I can't say too much about it other than it seemed like I was in the country and getting service was horrible where I visited.
- +1 y
I live in the capital of South Carolina. Not sure if that's where you visited but there's nothing here to do. If you visited Myrtle Beach, I can understand why you found it lovely. It's a tourist site.
Asker+1 yNot that I’ve been to. Almost every southern state. Hawaii looks like it’s the only state that could be better but I’ve never been. I like Massachusetts, Illinois, and Florida, but California was the best one.
- +1 y
Yeah I've been to Illinois and that's certainly not better than California. I've never been to Massachusetts or Florida but I've heard bad things about Florida. Hawaii probably could be better but I've never been either.
Asker+1 y@Simslover92 no but I liked Chicago more than New York at least. I did like Switzerland more than California however.
Asker+1 y@Simslover92 SC was very depressing. I went when I was a teenager. Not a fan of the Beaches. I just don’t like it.
- +1 y
I've never been out the country but I'm sure it was much better than California! SC is very depressing. Can't wait to leave this state! 😩 I went at the wrong time when I visited Chicago. It was in the winter and brutally cold so I'm a little more for New York than Chicago.
- +1 y
@Simslover92 I wouldn't. I'm BLACK !!!
- +1 y
@handsomelad70 you wouldn't what?
- +1 y
@Simslover92 Live in West Virginia (I hear West Virginians with four or more teeth must pay a tax for having too many choppers) or South Carolina, which I hear hasn't changed much racially since former Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier left at fifteen to escape poverty and Jim Crow.

- +1 y
Blame fox and other right wing media for that perception
1.3K opinions shared on Travel topic. California, lifestyle-wise, used to be nice because it combined the best of liberal and conservative policies. No more. Now it is dominated by one party and what remains of the other party is wacko too, as evidenced by Trump winning with 75% of the GOP primary votes. It used to be more libertarian in some ways while still having good affordable higher education. Now that is gone - a-hole AG Bonta wants to tell the cities what to do.
Asker+1 yYeah the political thing confuses me because I’m from a more liberal state than California.
- +1 y
Blame California's deterioration on Ronnie Ray-Guns and Prop 13, zagor.
- +1 y
@handsomelad70 Uh, no. California has deteriorated considerably since it became a one-party state. Not that the other party is better, but with no checks on the idiots in the ruling party the assembly and senate starting cranking out a vast array of moronic bills. Jerry Brown put a stop to a lot of them, Newsom has been more reluctant to do so but has at least occasionally tried to keep an aspect of reality for the garbage pushed out by the legislative branches.
Prop. 13 kept people from being priced out of their homes just because their town suddenly became the "hot" place to live. Why should someone who paid 50k for their house have to pay taxes on a million dollar valuation just because a bunch of a-holes ruined the market?
Lol typical california superiority complex. There really isn't anything great there but people from there tend to think it's better than everywhere else for no reason

I've lived in California for most of my life. I've visited all the Western states, including Hawaii and Alaska, as well parts of the south and mid-west and honestly, no other state in the U. S. comes close to diversity of geography and attractions. In this sense we ARE the best. It's not a complex, it's just a fact. Even Ron DeSantis admitted that while he hates the state's politics, he's never seen such beautiful coastline and such diverse landscapes.
However, when it comes to our politics, laws, culture and people we are certainly not the best.
+1 yCalifornia is a beautiful powerful state, but it’s economic strength comes from government subsidies otherwise they would have no agricultural sector.
despite its geography, the way the state is run is causing too many people to suffer except for those making so much money that regardless of a 95% tax rate they would still live care free.

The weather and the people. I love that it barely rains there unlike SC. I also thought the people were way more amicable and welcoming.

I think they just haven't been to the right places in Cali. Visiting a place like Los Angeles would probably change their minds. At least it did for me.
Asker+1 yI don’t think there is a better state.

Hawaii may have California beat though. I've heard nothing but good things about it. I've had a few people I know move out there.

Asker+1 yInnovation like what you see with Apple, Meta, and other stuff there. Food is the best in the country. Healthy lifestyle, long life expectancy.
Asker+1 yGood weather like warm, not a lot of rain, attractive women, the people are much more friendly than where I am from, about as friendly as southerners but without all the bad things about the south. It’s the least boring state to me, the most beautiful nature also.
- +1 y
Well with those standards in mind the following places come to mind outside the US.
Japan
South Korea
Singapore
Germany
Sweden
Australia
All of those countries are naturally beautiful have good tech industries, good food, beautiful and decent people and pretty clean living overall.
Now within the US
Massachusetts
Washington
Minnesota
North Carolina
Maryland
Hawaii
Vermont
Those are some of the best states in terms of natural beauty, innovation or health.
Asker+1 yWashington, Massachusetts, are cool states I’ve liked, but the weather ruined it for me, and I just didn’t like them as much as California. I did not like North Carolina, I went to Baltimore as a child and hated it. I do think Hawaii might be the only state that could be on par with California, but I’ve never been keep in mind. States worse than California I’ve been to
Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, SC, NC, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, NJ, NY, CT, Maine, Massachusetts, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nevada, and Texas.
Asker+1 yMy favorite states I’ve visited in order
1. California
2. Nevada
3. Washington (forgot to put it on the list up there of states I’ve been to.
4. Colorado
5. Florida
Asker+1 yI would have to say Switzerland, is slightly better than California, but California is very close in terms of greatness. I’ve never visited those countries you listed but Switzerland being a little bit better than California, you could be right with some of them, but Sweden looks too cold for me, Switzerland feels warmer than the US Northeast it’s not like a bone chilling cold, in terms of wealth and innovation, it reminds me a lot of California.
- +1 y
Well I mean the countries were just ones I listed based off of your own standards Japan for instance probably has an arguably bigger tech industry then California does since it's nation wide and it is definitely a beautiful country.
Then had to do my best with the states since most of them won't have every single thing you want.
Asker+1 yYeah California matches it. I do believe Japan could beat California but in the US nothing can in my opinion.
I grew up in Cali and while I love my home, I would rather have been born in NC.

Definitely nice, but a bit small, more difficult travel, not as much variety (CA has all the nice weather, but also has snowboarding, for example).
Though HI's water, so warm, the tropical storms, much better than the colder water in CA and colder rain.
I think the economy, high wages, high cost of living is about the same.
