What are the best countries in Latin America for an American to visit? Anybody have any vacation ideas? How are Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico?

My ideal location is a place with nice, clean, modern cities, friendly locals, beaches and jungle.

Ideally I would like for the vacation to be around 7-9 days, and I’d also prefer to visit at a warm time of year, but not the most hot time of year either.

I’d want for it to be relaxing, and I’m not one of those guys that just has to plan like 5 activities a day.

I don’t mind just relaxing at the hotel, or resort or wherever I’m staying sometimes

And yes, I think being able to snorkel and see coral reefs is also a huge plus.

Costa Rica is really nice (and fairly safe) and I liked the island nations like Cuba and Hispaniola. The resorts have of course everything but are boring after one day. Get a hotel with a bike included or rent a scooter to get around. If a seller or stand has no prices displayed, beware. Check out the smaller restaurants where the locals eat, they have great food. The motorbike taxi drivers are often thieves and con-men. The public busses are often unreliable, but dirt cheap. Expect to see a lot of rundown infrastructure and prepare to be approached by prostitutes. Don't march blindly into an unknown favela, especially in Colombia, Mexico and Brazil. Ask in the hotel where not to go.

Prostitution is part of the shadow economy, especially in touristy areas with many gringos. It happened to me in Santo Domingo and Havana and I have heard it happening to other guys in Mexican resort towns.

I don't know about the other countries. But my dad was born in Mexico, and it has very beautiful places to visit, such as; Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Cozumel, and lots of other places. If you do visit, you need to be very safe. Don't wear flashy clothes, and if you take cash or a lot of extra money make sure to not let it be known. There's some dangerous people there. But it depends too on where you are I believe. It can be safe though if your careful
