I went to South Africa back in 2000... and what stood out the most were:
#1. Reinforced bars over all doors and windows.
#2. Everyone massively racist there.
#3. Black car guards paid in pocket change to discourage cars being broken into.
#4. Aggressive car window washers.
#5. Massive scrap slums outside Cape Town.
#6. Monkeys will just straight up get into houses and steal things.
#7. Geckos hang out on the ceiling like spiders do elsewhere.
#8. It is uncomfortably warm even in the middle of winter.

Can't really judge how things have changed in the past 24 years though. Maybe it got better. No idea.
