Would you ever go on holiday somewhere where there is an active volcano?

I did... sort of.

In June 2005, I had a job that required me for 2 weeks to be at a customer's location in Longview, Washington. Longview is on the Columbia River and the state of Oregon is just south and about 45 minutes northwest of Portland, Oregon on I-5 when I-5 goes from following the river to suddenly going north to Seattle.

Now, it was cool most of the time that I was there - typical cloudy and/or rainy weather in the US Pacific Northwest. However, one day was a mandatory day off. And, luckily, this turned out to be a good day. So, I visited Mount Saint Helens. It had been 25 years since May 1980 when the mountain erupted with a pyroclastic flow and that resulted in the greatest landslide in recorded history. About 1400 feet of the mountain top ceased to exist as it fell down its north side. Well, since late 2004, Mount Saint Helens was erupting again. Not explosively like in 1980, but a very steady eruption creating new rock in the crater at the top of the mountain. I visited the Johnson Ridge Observatory several miles from the center of the mountain and it was a very impressive and somewhat scary sight. Had the mountain erupted again like in 1980, we all would have been dead just like anyone who would have been standing in that location in May 1980. While the sky was clear, there was a single cloud hovering over the top of the mountain all from the gases coming of out it during the continuous erupting.

There are plenty of places I would still like to go to that didn't have an active Volcano, but I'd look in to how accurate those seismologist's predictions were before going on a holiday to one. ie, how long before an eruption do you get to leave?

Eruptions are pretty unpredictable so I don't really know if that's a good guarantee!!

I'm not sure I would. I don't cope very well with heat and I'm not sure end up like the poor people of Pompei frozen in time covered in Ash!!🤭 So probably not.

I just looked into the potential warnings Vesuvius gave before that dreadful day, and there were a series of earthquakes beforehand, only back then nobody knew what they meant!

Indeed. And it's something that is happening again in an area that is called " campi flegrei" which is close to Vesuvius and they keep on getting regular strong tremors up until a few days ago and so potentially it could happen again..
