My family has traveled the world last few years, never had a concern.
I wonder if the reception will be as good if we venture out?
I have friends in Canada and France whom are cordial, welcome to visit and and for us to visit them. But not everyone is a friend.
I'm in Canada (Toronto). It depends. Most Americans are welcome. Canadians are going to be as welcoming as ever. I've got family in the US, and so do many other Canadians. There is no ill will towards a tourist from the US.
MAGA is not at all welcome here though. It'll certainly be politely tolerated most places. There's definitely one dude with those views at every workplace (at least). Nobody would throw garbage at them in the street. But you would definitely sense the hostility of everyone around you if you were to overtly advertise being a MAGA American tourist.
And... frankly people would definitely have something to shout at you in the street. Not... everybody, but I would be surprised if you could get through the day in a MAGA hat without being shouted at by random passers by. Maybe that point is more fantasy. I haven't seen that happen. To be fair, I've never seen a MAGA hat here. (I'm sure somebody has worn one, but it's never been popular here. Now it's downright hated)
People feel differently here than they did even a few months ago. It's been a huge change we all talk about being huge, and overnight. We see your country differently than we did a few months ago.
It really depends. We tend to see "Americans" as now consisting of two very very different kinds of people. The two do not share the same values, or vision for your country. The past few months have moved this view from the "Anti-Trump" camp, to be the absolutely widespread general view. You hear people talking shit about what's happening in the US... everywhere you go. Everywhere.
There would be a noticeable difference I would think. For an American wearing pro-MAGA support in some public way.
Otherwise, Americans are as welcome as always. But there has been a monumental shift in people's attitudes and views here over the last 3 months or so.

I can understand the backlash... Jesus got crucified for being 'testy', the change here is severe and the person in charge only knows one way to make progress and is pressed for time. it is not pleasant.

I had to look it up, and over 90% of Canadians are against the idea of joining the US. I've never seen Canadians so united over anything. It's completely changed everything about our upcoming election. There is nothing Canadians feel stronger about, then not becoming a part of the US.
Until 3 months ago, it would just be a little cringe for a Canadian to wear a USA hat. Canadians have always defined themselves; is by talking about how we are not like America or Americans. That's been true my whole life:
(we're more polite, more of a culturally diverse place, we have good healthcare... etc. It's always in the relation to America or Americans)
So this has gone from a sorta dad-joke about a lack of a defined Canadian Identity. (you can see for yourself how your Canadian friends answer the question "what does it mean to be Canadian" although... your friends are definitely not typical Canadians, and may have a different answer than most)
It's not a dad-joke joke anymore. It's militantly serious. It's become this universal (well more than 9 in 10 people) unifying thing that cuts across all racial, religious and political divides. It's a society wide mobilization to mitigate the unprovoked attack, from a best friend. Not being American is now a part of Canadian's national identity in an intense way.
The only debate is how best to fend off a predatory America. Not whether or not we should.
They really would throw garbage at your Canadian friends in the streets if they advertised being a Canadian wanting to join the US. At least in Toronto.
I don't want to throw the word "traitor" around lightly. But... lets just say that would be seen as way worse than any American MAGA supporter.
I want to stress the abruptness of this change. There was generally very positive feeling about the US until this change in course. It was a striking change. I've never seen anything like it.
I think an American who came to Canada this past Christmas, would be shocked at the difference if they returned today for another visit.
Not so much in how a tourist is treated; but in the overall tone and mood here. It surprises Canadians; to see just how militant Canadians of all kinds have become about this overnight. (in a non-violent way. No secret guerilla training camps... yet...π)

In Australia , if they are willing to make that trip most are okey and polite , but right now with the accent you will not be welcomed , people are more pissed off about acceptance of this stuff and lack of decent..
I wouldn't go to the US now , we feel completely betrayed , we have 5 US bases that we have lived with since the 70s.. this stuff has changed everything. We need to see decent , and it needs to be widespread.

I don't care if Americans come here the only thing that's annoying about them is they talk SO loud in public places and all tourists stand in the middle of the damn footpath to stare/take photos of the buildings. Just talk quietly nobody on the other side of the building needs to hear your conversation and step to the side and be aware of your surroundings if you're admiring a building
@Rei13 the talking loud thing is definitely Americans (accents) and the stopping in the middle of the footpath is an every tourist thing. I hate going into the city in the middle of tourist season because of that specifically. It's hard to move around on a normal day without someone just stopping right in your path π
Canadians are smart enough to know that only 77 million Americans voted for Trump. So if you just stay away from talking politics in the Tim Hortons you will be fine. But to think its business as usual would be a mistake. Canadians are very pissed off at America... mostly Trump and his supporters.

It seems kind of dumb that people who didn't have a problem with Americans visiting before, would have a problem with them visiting now, just because of who's in office. Not much will change, maybe USD becomes just weaker and you will pay more for currencies in other countries. Maybe some restaurant employees will add unusual special ingredients to dishes American tourists order.

Those of us considering moving to Canada are doing so because of Trump.
Dude is literally insane and is firing important workers and gutting critical gov programs (both of which are causing deaths), and that combined with his stupid tarrifs are causing an economic crash.
Thankfully in a few years he's permanently barred from ever being "elected" again. But I just don;t understand with everything he's done why he haddnt been impeached or arrested.
Maga is mostly people in the southern states, but every election has been rigged through tossed out paper ballots, voter machine hacking, gerrymandering, and the electoral college, and the current system has the president and congress voting on bills instead of the people, so even if we fixed vote rigging we'd still be fucked over.
Most people in the US are aware of all this and consider all politicians to be con artist dictators, and so we don't bother voting or even getting involved in politics at all.
The US economy will crash and fortunes will be made putting the broken pieces of the economy back together. Manufacturing was never meant to return to the US. That ship sailed years ago
He's not insane. His moves are predictable and if you follow history you can make a lot of money. All his moves have been done before and are designed to make money if you figure out the pattern
1. The US actually does manufacture a lot of things, it just doesn't export most of them.
2. Technology manufacturing is mostly done in southeast asia, but thats because china has most of the world's rare earth supply and Japan has the physical tech and game markets cornered, it has nothing to fo with the current state of the US.
3. Choosing to be a dick to entire countries worth of people because "money" is definitely insane. But he goes one step further and has lost a ton of money doing that. He was actually far more wealthy before he became the president the first time. And once he is out of office (and thus no longer immune) he's got so many felony charges awaiting him that he won't be able to use what he has left.
Now regardless of this, I'd rather live in Japan, the geek lifestyle, self betterment and politeness culture, and the dating options for atheist gamer women all fit me better there, but learning the language is hard, immigration laws there is awful, and most people there are xenophobic. Combine that with the risk of flying right now and I can either stay put or go to Canada. But in any case, Trump or not, it sucks here.
I don't mind them but I won't be visiting America until Trump is gone and I don't have to be worried about being thrown in jail at the airport when I arrive.

We also see a lot of Canadian license plates up here in New England.
I was in Central/Eastern Europe earlier this year and Americans visiting is seen as odd but they're welcoming. Nobody cares too much about politics in my experience

I live in the US, but I go to Greece. Theyβre welcoming, but they know my family. Especially where I go, it's not too touristy, though the last two years have been crazy. But it brings money.
