Have you ever traveled to the Florida Keys?

Have you ever took a trip to the Florida Keys? What month of the year did you go? Did you stay in the Keys, or did you stay on the mainland and drive in? Just curious as I am thinking of it for next winter when the weather is cooler.

I've been to the Keys a long time ago. I know it's grown a lot since then. I went all the way to Key West. I stayed a few days on one of the intermediate islands, not Key West.

It was summer. I did a lot of fishing from the bridges, and occasionally from shore. I also went fishing out in a small rental boat - and got lost among all the zillion islands.

As for staying on the mainland, it's a long drive if you go all the way to Key West. I wouldn't recommend doing Key West in a day from the mainland. It can be done, but it would be a whirlwind with a lot of driving. I'm not even sure where the closest point is on the mainland that has lodging or camping.

Sounds great. I have heard of people fishing from the bridges. I was thinking of maybe staying in Key Largo but that is just a thought. It is still pretty far to get to Key West from Key Largo. I think staying on the mainland is probably unrealistic.

@WindAtMyBack I just got back from a trip to Key West last week. After a lot of "looking into it" I decided to go all the way from Miami in a rental car to Key West the first day, and then stay there for a couple of days, then work our way back. From Miami to Key West is a nice drive. Coming back we stayed at Islamorada, and then to the Everglades for a few days.

Many years ago, my family (then-wife and 3 kids) spent a week in April renting a bungalow at a place on Key Largo. I don't know if it's still there. There were things to do locally, and it was a good base to go to other places on the Keys.

I was thinking of staying in Key Largo, and then branching out from there. Maybe heading to Key West and spending one night there. Since I live on the West Coast, this will be an interesting change.

@AviatorTom I just got back last week. We went to Key West from Miami airport the first day, then worked our way back. The Keys were nice! I'd like to do it again.
