How good is your sense of orientation? Do you easily get lost or do you find it easy to understand where you are?

Question

When I ask this question I literally mean the kind of scenario in which you find yourself visiting a new place you've never been to before and you need to find your bearings. Of course this is the kind of scenario in which you don't have Google maps to help and where WiFi is totally absent.

Not at all. I almost navigated my mom back across the Canadian border once😂
If my map doesn't have every little street and isn't oriented in the direction I'm facing, I get confused. Even then, I don't know which way to go, and I have to look at the blip on Google Maps, and I'll often just start walking and if the blip is moving in the wrong direction, I'll turn around.
I don't know how people navigate with paper maps/atlases. I stopped bothering with paper maps for navigation and only use them for referance to see what's around.
In Venice, if I hadn't had Google Maps, there's no way I would've found my hotel. On the way back my phone died and I got completely lost, I kept ending back up in the same dead end street.
On my most recent trip, I couldn't get out of my hotel courtyard, I kept ending up back in it😂
And on a ferry recently, I was trying to go up to the deck and got stuck at a parking area and couldn't get out and had to call my dad to get me.
I also got lost once on my own college compass
And whenever people ask me for directions, I always end up giving them the longest most complicated route😂
I still get lost in my own neighborhood.

Actually, if the streets are laid out in a grid, I'm fine. But if their sporadic, I always get so confused and lost.

It's decent. I can read google maps well lol even when it's not working properly sometimes. I never had that problem on my old phone but on the new phone it sometimes shows you looking in a different direction than you actually are I don't know it's weird. If I didn't have a phone and I'd have to use a map I could still do it but it would be a bit more impractical. I usually like being in a small area and knowing it well rather than knowing a large area but by now I've moved around the city quite a few times so I know quite a few places pretty well. There's still stuff I don't know but I'm very comfortable getting around :)

I think without the help of technology a situation like you pose would be very difficult and asking a lot of questions for directions.

@thegreenyogi I got 'lost' and disoriented in downtown Berlin, last August, late afternoon, with cell battery low. I called Uber, to take be back, (a couple of miles from my hotel) Scary to be 'lost' in a strange city... especially out of the country.

I have a good sense of orientation, especially when parking the car in an unknown city and walking to my final destintation. I look for spots (names of buildings, street names, visual clues) along the way to be able to trace back my steps.

Good question.  Drop me in the middle of the woods and I’ll find my way out. Any woods, any time of the year.  Drop me in the middle of NYC and I’m totally lost, probably be dead in an hour.

Funny thing is I tend to do better in nature than I do in the city. If I'm in the middle of the forest, I tend to subsciously take note of the landmarks better than buildings or signs in a town

I've learned a lot about navigating from the military and travelling in general. I've got a pretty good sense of direction I think. Often don't rely on GPS
