Why does South American countries receive very few international tourists compared to Southeast Asian countries?

When I checked the most visited countries in the world , there's not ONE SINGLE south American country in the top 40 (Mexico is included in North America).

Because even Africa have 4 countries that are more visited than Argentina , which is the first in the continent but with only 7 million visitors.

On the contrary Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam Thailand Indonesia receive plenty of tourist from many different countries around the world especially Thailand.

Why is South America not a popular destination despite having a lot to offer and many beautiful places?

Because Europeans have more time and money to travel than Americans and the distance to each is about the same for both, maybe even longer flights to South America besides being a little more expensive than Asia.
