A person improves themselves... if you hate traveling and you do it more and get better at it. If you love traveling you do it more and get better at it. If you don't do it you don't improve. Reading about it isn't going to improve your experience traveling sure it might help you understand how to better enjoy the experience but you improved here again because you wanted to. So I dont think it's about how you learn it's about how much you want to learn and motivation behind it... People improve because they want to some people want experience some people want knowledge without the experience. The thing they have in common is the desire to want more.

Reading and traveling do not automatically improve people. They only do so if you actively create something new from them. If you just passively absorb external experiences, they are useless. The improvement comes from working on what you've absorbed from within, from creating something new out of it.
