Does anyone know how on earth, the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) is the most visited place in the Caribbean?

I think this is the least interesting country I've ever visited. The only place worth seeing was Los Haitises. As far as Santo Domingo and Punta Cana go, other islands have FAR better beaches and historic cities. It's also not as cheap as everyone says. In one restaurant for instance, we paid $40 US for 4 pieces of fried chicken, rice, sweet corn and 2 sodas. For that price, I can get a large combo meal at KFC and feed an entire family. Once you get outside of the resort area, it's so ugly and poor. Merchents pester you and everyone wants tips or to overcharge you. The tours were the worst and most disorganized I've taken anywhere. The women are ugly. I guess most people go to chill on the beach, but the Atlantic side is so bad for swimming and snorkeling compared to the Caribbean side. There are literally cheaper Caribbean islands that have far better beaches. They don't even allow women to be topless on the beaches. Nothing about this place feels Caribbean or is relaxing. Also, on every other Caribbean island I've seen tons of wildlife, I didn't even see any wildlife here except birds, crabs and a few lizards. Also, our guide took us to a local market and it was the most disgusting market I've ever been too. Not to mention one of our tour jeeps hit a pothole, I injured my foot and elbow and other people hit their heads, not even a "sorry" or "is everyone okay?" Another guy was passing out at a restaurant and the staff was just standing there. On tours, once the guide finished his job, they no longer cared about providing good service. I don't know if I would give anything in this country a 5 star rating. Maybe Los Hatises, but if you've been to SE Asia, these will probably be underwhelming. Not gonna lie, my first impression was actually good, but then started to decline. Byfar the most overrated country I've ever been to.
