What is a good city in Italy to visit for a first-time trip?

I went a few years ago. Frankly, when you're visiting Italy for the first time, you don't want to limit yourself to just one city. You want to hit as many iconic sites as possible. I personally wouldn't stay in Rome though. It has some nice sites, but everything else sucks! Go for a day, book a tour of the major sites and get out.

If you can afford it, I would stay in Venice. It's not as crazy/assholish as Rome, the food is better, and it's well connected so you can still visit other parts of Italy from there, and you can explore the city on your off days.

Some must see places include

Venice, The Lagoon Islands, the Alps (either Lake Garda or the Dolomites), Pisa, Florance, Cinque Terre, Rome/Vatican, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and at least one hill town (I'd recommend Tivoli). And I'd pick either Cinque Terre or Amalfi, though I personally found Amalfi a bit overrated.

You can visit Rome, but it's very busy. I might suggest visiting Tuscany. You can visit Florence, Sienna and enjoy the countryside of thousands of olive trees. And Pisa is not far away.

@NicholasofAustralia Traffic doesn't stop for pedestrians in Rome unless lives are at stake. It's like that Indiana Jones scene, Holy Grail: You just have to walk out on the invisible bridge and have faith it is there.

The north is much wealthier than the south... parts have similar incomes to Germany, whereas in the south it is often less than Greece. They are practically different countries.

So it depends whether you want art and marbles and Doge's palaces preserved immaculately to extract money from tourists, or a rustic cultural and historical experience. Either way, Rome is the starting point.
