Should I leave a bad hotel review or spare a struggling family business?

I was going to give a one star rating for my hotel in rome for 4 major and very valid reasons, but I decided there was no reason to persecute an already struggling and desperate family business.

A better approach would be to leave a letter explaining why you're dissatisfied. That way they can put things right without losing customers.

Sadly however a lot of tourist places don't worry about good service because they don't rely on repeat custom. In peak season even the really bad hotels and restaurants get fully booked so there's little motivation to improve.
