Thinking about going camping for the first time—what do you recommend?

Depending where you live, make sure you let people know where and with whom you are planning to go. Make sure you have a full battery on your smartphone and that you have a fully charged spare battery pack with you.

Punch in the phone number of your local emergency service but don't press the enter button. Having it ready makes it easier than to have to try to fumble at night or in the dark. Take something like a Swiss Army knife with you and don't forget a flashlight with a spare set of batteries.

Dress up warm. It is easier to peel off a layer of clothes than to try to find something to warm you up.

I live in an area that's currently being developed, and I can actually see the river and the lake from my balcony. So I'm thinking of camping somewhere nearby.

The area where I live was also inhabited by some of the earliest humans. We even have a cave here! 😅

For your first time, I recommend going to campsite that rents cabins. You'll be roughing it, and determining what you like, and dislike, about camping. Then, for next time, bring at tent and camping the tent.

Hint: Only buy what you need for a specific camping trip. Do it but everything you might need or want at once. Over time, you will buildup everything a seasoned camper needs.

And don't be upset if it turns out you don't like camping. Not everyone enjoys it.

I followed you. When I was a kid my parents took me camping all of the time. We slept in a tent and over time my parents accumulated all the camping gear you could ever need. Before bed we sat by the camp fire snd roasted marshmallows. The wood smoke helped keep the bugs away. Every morning I woke up to the smell of eggs, bacon & sausages cooking in a old well seasoned cast iron frying pan over an open flame. After breakfast we'd go fishing to hopefully catch some fresh fish for lunch or supper. Those were the days, I loved it.

I recommend renting a semi-rustic cabin for your first time. If you enjoy that. Go full rustic next time. If that’s fun, try tent camping in a campground. Finally, if you dig that, go wilderness camping in a tent. That’s as good as it gets, but it’s not for everyone.

Why are you camping in a city

Istanbul isn't entirely urban. I live in one of the areas that has only recently started to develop. It's a place surrounded by nature. When I open my window, I wake up to views of a lake and a river. Istanbul is a beautiful and culturally rich city. There is even a cave right next to my home that is associated with some of the earliest humans who lived in the area. Istanbul isn't just beautiful—it also teaches us so much through its history. I love my city and my country.
