The number next to the country is the number of taxes that legally exist in the country. In France, you could encounter 348 separate taxes, almost 3x the number of taxes in the other countries.

These numbers represent the number of distinct (individual) taxes levied by each European country.

This data originates from a report mapped by Visual Capitalist using datasets from Eurostar and Tax Policy Associates.

The high number of specialized taxes in countries like France stems from centuries of political compromises and specific industrial levies (such as for vocational training, gambling, and nuclear energy).

The European average sits at approximately 90 distinct individual taxes per country.

Even though there are others I think should be way up there if we are considering them part of "official" Europe - Scandinavia , Netherlands- let's try separate taxes.

If it were world heritage sites or wineries I'd expect Italy to be high on the list.
Solar power should see the sunnier places having more.
I'd expect Germany to be higher if it was breweries.

Wineries is tempting because it can't be breweries as Germany is not in the list. But I can't accept UK has 90 wineries even though wineries does not imply vineyards.

So it has to be taxes.
