The tweet didn't reveal him to be gay, if youbread the tweet its shpwing support for LGBTQI because the makers of the character said he is asexual back in early 2000's this information is stupidly easy to learn, which, let me remind everyone asexuals are a part of the LGBTQI community, just because you're in support of LGBTQI doesn't automatically make you gay :)
Now go ahead headcanon him to be gay for as long as you want just dont confuse fanfic with canon because in the end of the day, its the creation of Stephen Hillenburg and he's word on the characters sexual identity is the official word.
"In 2005, a promotional video which showed SpongeBob along with other characters from children's shows singing together to promote diversity and tolerance, was criticized by a Christian evangelical group in the United States because they felt the SpongeBob character was being used as an advocate for homosexuality though the video contained "no reference to sex, sexual lifestyle or sexual identity."James Dobson of Focus on the Family accused the video's makers of promoting homosexuality because a gay rights group had sponsored the video
The incident led to the question whether SpongeBob is a homosexual character. In 2002, when SpongeBob's popularity with gay men grew, Hillenburg denied the suggestion. He clarified that he considers the character to be "somewhat asexual."

Not sure how to take this but honestly, I think gay is a huge understatement. If anything, he's pan-sexual like Deadpool meaning he can take a liking for just about anyone. To those complaining grow the fuck up and think logically. You REALLY believed Spongebob was straight the whole time? Get fuckin' real. Whether Nick ended up announcing it or not, there was more than obvious signs for years he wasn't fully straight. I'll never forget going to Target in the early 2000s and seeing that he was the only character that could found in both the guys and girls clothing section. That right there says plenty. How many characters you know of that could both be seen either looking serious with guitars/bikes AND sparkles/rainbows? Spongebob is like THE only character that's been around since the 90's who could fit for that so well. Wake the fuck up. What you think about gayness doesn't matter because it's opinion vs logic.
If anyone really has a problem with a cartoons sexuality they need to get a life, to be honest.
The way I see it, it’s good to show kids that all sexualities exist. Heterosexuals have been shown on tv for years. It’s hard for people to come out, it’s been more difficult for a kid who is confused and doesn’t know if their feelings are valid. Having a character that is gay can be someone that a kid can look up to. And for people who say kids are too young: did you know you liked the opposite sex when you were a kid? Chances are you did. So why couldn’t a little boy know he likes other boys?
Happy Pride Month everyone!
SpongeBob first aired 21 years ago, so it took Nickelodeon that long to "out" a cartoon character. Who's next Bart Simpson ,... Spider-Man and Aquaman might be lovers too. How absurd is it that a cartoon, a drawing, is gay when the show has nothing to do with sex or anything close to sexuality. 5 year olds watch SBSP, will SBSP start to sleep with Patrick in the pineapple.
Dont get me wrong, I am Bi and my husband is too, but this is insane, if Rebecca on This is Us comes out as a lesbian, that is fine, real person real life, but a kids cartoon. Can't wait to read about the new plot lines for a Gay Sponge.

Can't we just keep one thing innocent. Cartoons were supposed to be a fun show for kids. Can't we keep politics or sex out of kids cartoons? There's so many other far more suitable outlets for those topics than kids shows or cartoons.
Ok two things
-He isn't gay he is asexual
-I really wish that we could just keep things like cartoons away from politics/sexuality or things like that.
I mean... Im not mad or angry or anything (I don't even really care lol 😂) , I still find Spongebob one of the best cartoons ever but I don't really see the reason to make him straight/gay/asexual or whatever.I feel that it's not a good idea for them to expose children to sexuality of any form at such a young age. They haven't even gone through puberty yet, so I see no point of them watching shows that are basically teaching sex ed.
Making characters gay simply to give people representation is frankly dumb. I hate to break it to everyone but the majority of the population isn't gay. Having at least one gay person show up in EVERY.. SINGLE... SHOW. Is not realistic. It's not realistic at all. I've never cared that the majority of shows I'd watched have been men which is why I'm rather indifferent to CONSTANTLY having "Strong female leads" always.
Homosexuality is over-represented in television entertainment because gay people control everything, although as many as 40% of women are either lesbian or bisexual, only a few percent of men are homosexual or bisexual... yet there's a gay guy on every television show now.
You people sell out to any corrupt belief, ever since the Supreme Court shot down Proposition 8, everybody has gone the opposite way, even though just a decade ago 3/4ths majority of the U. S. population wanted an amendment banning homosexual marriage. So now that the supreme court ruled in favor of homosexual marriage, you all sold out and went with the supreme court's decision.
That makes you sell-outs and it makes you spineless cowards.
And yeah, women think homosexality is "cute" because damned near half of all women are homosexuals themselves.Nothing about this is "offensive" to me, characters can be whatever sexual orientation the writers want. But when it's SO transparent how they're trying to cash in on the cultural trend of LGBT "alliance"... just announcing it on the Internet to show how virtuous they are... well I just find that ridiculous. If it was woven into the character's development in the show in a natural progression over time, nobody would raise an eyebrow. But when the producers just fart out the announcement on twitter overnight, during Pride month of all times, well my cynical brain can't help but see through what they're really doing here
Way to ruin a kids show. Shove down politics, LGBT and sexual orientation down the throats of the kids. Never mind friendship lessons from My Little Pony.

How about they paint Sandy's fur blue while they're at it and introduce dark colored marine life.
Social justice one two three
WOOO WOOO
I wanna be PC
WOOO WOOOThat's cool. Since he's asexual, that works.
The whole children point is hypocritical cause people don't seem to have s problem with heterosexual couples kissing in a children's cartoon but when they show a character who is simply said to be LGBTQ suddenly it's inappropriate and sexualising stuff. Well Anna kissing Kristoff in Frozen was sexualising, making the bunny in zootopia look attractive to people (cannot stress how weird that it) is sexualising.
If people think a child will become gay after watching this, newsflash, the kid was already gay.Except they didn't. They tweeted a picture of him and two other characters in pride colors to show support for pride month. Spongebob is the face of Nickelodeon so of course he is in the pictures. Plus the creator said years ago that he thinks of spongebob as asexual which makes sense as sea sponges are literally asexual.
can we just leave the kids shows alone please? And not shove politics into them? Not everything needs to be politicized.
And while we probably all did assume he was gay anyway ( even though he's not ) that doesn't mean it needs to be made an official thing, just leave it be and let it be an unspoken thing.as part of lgbt it hurts me that they think branding a character as gay will make us happy. we want characters who are gay from the beginning. we want characters who actually are gay. i am not rooting for stereotypical gay stuff. but i feel like this is just stupid. like yea. i like cartoons where main character has 2 moms or sth. but spongebob is just ehh. he doesn't have any serious relationships. why would it matter if he is gay or not?
I believe sexual orientation is not a topic to be thrown on young children. That is something they can decide on when they are older. If society keeps forcing homosexuality on young children without giving them a choice then we are no better than those of the past who forced their children to be heterosexual.
And then was the guy who pretended to be gay so it wouldn't look funny living with 2 girls. John Ritter inThree's Company. Or the 2 guys who pretended to be girls so they could live in a girl's dorm. Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari in Bosom Buddies. TV caters to all.
Am I gonna see spongebob fuck another spongedude in the ass or suck another spongey dick on television? No why the fuck would I care either way then? 😂
People really gonna pretend to be upset about what a fictional Character is sexually attracted to now, which they will never see any sexual content of them anyway cause it's a fucking kids show. Get a life to whomever is upset over that 😂I mean, as an adult who watches spongebob, it's weird but I can totally see that.
I just think it's wrong for children to have cartoon characters 'sexualized'. Not all cartoons should be mixed with sexuality. It just seems wrong.
You wanna make people more tolerant and aware and educated? Just stop making everything about sexuality.
When I was a kid, I didn't know what those things were. I grew up, learnt about those and have no problem with it. Kids probably don't even care about those things.Nickelodeon are money-milking idiots. The creator of SpongeBob, years ago said that he considers all his characters to be asexual, because - well it's freaking kids show. End of discussion.
I don't get why they have to disrespect Stephen Hillenburg like that. He clearly stated that SpongeBob is asexual in an interview. I don't mind if it's implemented in new shows. I'm all for inclusivity. But it seems to me that the Nickelodeon team just do whatever they want with SpongeBob ever since Stephen died, because he's not there to say no. If I remember correctly he didn't even want a third movie to come out, but they did it anyways. They're just spitting on his wishes
Now he can team up with "magically out-of-the-closet-Dumbledore" as just revealed as an afterthought by JK Rowling 20 years later and they can be gay together.
Also he's a Sponge so explain that one during the sex talk Nickelodeon. And Patrick Star has no penis.People literally said this back when I was in grade school... Saying it now just seems like pointless pandering, probably Nick being desperate to be relevant again.
And why "asexual" is even part of the protected alphabet of preferential treatment is beyond comprehension...What you thought he was innocently selling chocolate door to door and not his butt-hole with condoms? He did say here we cum and offered his colocate with nut! That's pretty gay... I never watched that show so I don't really care.
