In the past two months, there have been three gun deaths in my hometown: 2 murders and one suicide. My town is small and up until now, very safe. Everybody seems to be losing their minds. The first murder happened when a guy went to visit his friend but the friend was tripping on mushrooms and he shot his visitor to death. 15-year-old Cailin was murdered on Sunday by her stepfatherThe most recent incident happened on Sunday, two blocks from me. A SWAT team was called and news crews lined the street. They were trying to get a barricaded gunman to surrender after he shot his 15-year-old stepdaughter in the back four times as she was trying to get her little brother to safety at the next-door neighbor's house. The neighbor lady also got shot in the leg. While the neighbor recovered, the teen girl sadly died the next morning at the hospital. The stepfather committed suicide sometime in the hours that followed while barricaded in his house. I did when I was a kid. My home was always a safe place. We had VERY close by neighbors but had privacy because there was a thin layer of woods around. The only usage towards safety that our gun was for was the snakes in our pond. The state came down once and cut down part of the woods. When you came down the road you could see our house but before that you wouldn't even know a house was down there unless you knew my family. Not long after the woods were cut a guy showed up with a gun. He was watching the house from the edge of the woods about 20 feet away. That was the first incident out of someone from my family ALWAYS living on the property. My family has live there for 50 years. Trailer after trailer was put there household after household. My little sister freaked out because she saw the guy. My dad went out on the porch with his gun. Yelled who's out there 3 times with no response and then threatened to shoot. He shot the gun in the air 3 times then left the porch and walked to the area where we saw the guy. The person aimed the gun and my father shot in the direction of him. We finally got my father back in the house. Called the sheriff and they went to inspect the woods. We didn't shoot him and the guy fled. From that point I ALWAYS felt safer to sleep anywhere but at my house. Being alone in the house used to be my favorite thing but I was to scared to be alone in that house from that day. I was there alone a lot there and every time I thought someone was outside the first place I went was my father's closet and stayed in there until I figured they were gone. I knew how to use a firearm and that is were my dad's gun was. The reason I would think someone was outside was because ALL 7 of our dogs bark when someone was out there and they started doing that again. Some might ask why I didn't lock the door well I locked the front but the back door was broken. It would fly open at any random moment so it was bungee corded shut and it was EASY to break into. That was all 24 years ago and I am not afraid to stay home but if I ever see some rando walking around my yard gun or no gun I would go get my pistil from our gun cabinet and go out there and tell them to leave or I call the cops. The gun was to show them that I could protect myself if they caused me any harm.

Masks pretty much mean the camera's are not so good, but as long as no one actually knows its a gun free zone you should be okay. I'd not advertise to anyone that it is a gun free zone though, never know who might get some idea's to rape, rob or kill. Also depends on average response time it would take police to get there. Where I live it can take a very long time, over an hour sometimes. Can you really wait even 15 or 20 minutes if it takes them that long?

Now, you can also reduce the chances of a negligent discharge by actually handling your gun, which is something that people, particularly spooked anti-gun left-wingers who got a gun "just to be safe", don't really do. I made a point of this when I got my first firearm to practice loading, unloading, and cycling cartridges with things known as snap caps. They're little plastic or metal recreations of cartridges that obviously have no powder or bullet at the end.
When I pick up a gun that I do not intend to immediately use, my first action is to unload the mag and verify that the chamber is completely empty. I live alone, so once I've done that, I allow myself a little more leeway in handling the gun, while still not doing dumb shit like pointing it at my dog or pretending it's an evoker from Persona 3. Again, habit building, and that's the exact kind of habit you DON'T want to build. Once I've done that, then I start playing with the snap caps to practice handling the gun.
Finally, the instant alcohol passes my lips, I don't touch my guns anymore for the night.

That's the problem with guns, they give rage, which is a form of insanity and can brought on by alcohol, snubs on social media or any of the million things we can get pissed off over something that is usually overblown, can have easy access to something designed to kill, not hurt, people. The chances of the victim being arrested is 1.22% in red states (in all cases, the charges were dismissed after the investigation), 7.92% in blue states (most cases are still ongoing, nice job defending the police, about 20% are completed and all were dismissed). Your views are based solely on the anecdotal and even among those, the lesson is not to do drugs and don't hand your gun to someone you don't know or someone you do know who has serious problems. Your examples have nothing to back them up and even if it did, the right to self defense and to keep and bear arms isn't weakened by a few bad cases in a pool of millions of great ones where perpetrators were stopped and the victim got to go home to their family after the deadly force encounter.
Where I live or have lived most my life, law enforcement is hours away. I don't really want to wait around for over an hour to get a cop to my house when someone is trying to break in and hurt me.
I have successfully used a gun to defend myself in a parking lot where I a guy attacked me with a knife, I have a huge 18 inch scar where he cut me open. I also have a neighbor who while home alone defended herself when some guy high on drugs or drunk or something was trying to break into her house to rape or kill her. She called 911, was told police would be 90 minutes out. She waited until he started actually breaking the door down before shooting him. She was content to not shoot him until that time.
Even when I lived in the big city while going to school, police could still take 20 to 30 minutes to show up. I would rather not have to rely on them for my own protection. The biggest thing is, there is thousands of cases a year of someone using a gun to defend themselves successfully, some of them are even potential mass shooters but soon as they start shooting a concealed carry person takes them out. The main stream media doesn't bother to report on those success stories, be it at home or out in public.

Just because you never heard of it doesn't mean it never happened. When someone stops a crime it doesn't get reported. The police may not even be called. Only crimes are recorded, not crimes that never happened.
Estimates range from several hundred thousand, to a few million crimes per year are stopped by gun owners (In the US). Most of these are not recorded in any kind of official record. The police are not called. It doesn't make the news. Because the crime never happened.

I have not had anyone break into my house. But I have stopped a crime outdoors. Same thing, they froze. I didn't even say a word. They looked up and saw me, and froze. (there were three of them)
Some people picture a shootout at the OK Corral. But any rational person, including criminals, will freeze. The way I see it, if they don't freeze when a gun is pointed at them, then they are a very dangerous kind of person. They are not the kind of person you want to face unarmed.

the reason a lot of people die while owning guns is because they are uneducated about them and just buy them and get a false sense of security and handle them like morons. There are thousands of stories where an armed homeowner was saved by having a gun. Those stories don’t fit the narrative of the lame stream media. What about the church in TX where an armed citizen shot and killed a shooter. In my hometown a guy had a gun and was robbing a store a law abiding citizen shot and killed the would be robber. here's a big one. I dont judge anyone for what they do, with only one exception. The only thing that i look down upon is anything, and everything, that has a negative impact on the people that i consider "with me".

I absolutely feel safer with a firearm, and having a firearm has been a huge comfort in multiple dangerous situations where it meant that if things went south I would have a fighting chance.

I've handled plenty of guns in mainly controlled environments My home defence involves a softball bat, a ball-peen hammer, a rusty old field knife (if the blade doesn't kill you the blood poisoning will) and a darkness that allows me to consider a justified killing to be one of those things

Security is an inside job. I know I sound deep but people don't understand it isn't the guy that makes them feel safe. They can allow themselves to feel that way without the gun they just won't let themselves. I'm not on any side I just think 99% of people lack wisdom and that causes nearly ever issue there is on the planet. Ignorance is the only issue there is. We just haven't figured out how to be safe without guns. Although clearly other countries have.
i do feel safe with my gun and if i wouldn't have had it at one point, i wouldve been dead, my past wasn't a good past so it lead up to this and i had to shoot back at someone, when i shot back, they ran off so yea i do feel safe with my gun

I'm being serious when I say this. I feel much less safe knowing there's guns in this house. The fact I don't know where they are is both a curse and a blessing. Blessing because if I knew where they were I'd probably have blown my brains out over the bathtub years ago. Curse because if something does go down, all I got is the kitchen knives and even that isn't much.
Definitely feel safer with a gun in my home. I'd rather die a soldier than a victim. Honestly, how have you never heard of one case where a firearm was used in self defense? Think you are just being dishonest with yourself..

There is no Far more likely. If you know how to handle a weapon and keep it secured, those things don't happen. There are break-ins every day in this country, not to mention rapes and murders. I'll take my chances. I also believe in burglar bars and good physical security. IP-Cameras and home security systems have their place, but they can't stop heinous crimes from being committed. They can only help to catch the perpetrator.
You'll need at least something as a backup because tasers only work about half of the time. Even if they do work, what's your next course of action? They'll get back up and they might attack again, they might run off. Also, it's useless against multiple attackers, especially if one is armed. There's a reason officers only use tasers when there's lethal cover because they are ineffective.
DEFINATLY safer. I grew up around guns, carried one in the military, when working for the DOC and carry nearly every day as a civilian. It is not to force my views on others, but to prevent some evil person from forcing their way on me or others.
