As an immigrant who was a resident alien for tax purposes for quite a few years, I think this new trend of taking offense in normal words is dumb.

The word 'alien' means someone from another country/planet. Saying that the word alien is offensive means that you think people saying you come from another country is offensive which means you are ashamed of the place you are from. Which I find very problematic. If you are ashamed of your heritage the problem is not with the word the problem is with you. I thinks aliens would be happy to be called aliens.
