This scenario played out in Russia in the mid '80's, the Russian defense system detected a large US missile launch against the then Soviet Union.
It was a glitch with a computer/hardware problem.
There was no attack.
One Russian military leader was in the chain of command to launch the Russian missiles.
He made the decision that this was not really happening and stopped the instructions to launch missiles.
He save the world that day.
Today, there is a chain of command to use nuclear weapons, this came out within the last week, that there are people in this chain that don't agree with the situation in Ukraine and could stop this from happening.
I guess we'll see !!.
