No it’s not illegal to be a prostitute/sell sex. It is however illegal to hire i prostitute/pay for sex. Might sound weird but the reason why selling is legal when buying is not is to not make sex trafficked people or people who were somehow forced or manipulated to sell sex scared of contacting the police about it and get help.

It's illegal, but it doesn't seem to stop anyone from doing it. Like they say, it's the oldest profession there is.
