More than 5100 people moved to Florida this year. Do you think some are sorry they moved there because now they have to deal with the hurricanes?

This might be a big deal for those people who are affected by the hurricanes every year. Now you see cars in long lines in Florida - but they are evacuation lines. I would have hated if I moved there to get away from the state I was living in, thinking Florida was better - until I had to learn to deal with hurricanes. That is a total inconvenience and hard work to pack up, and board up.
So, apparently Florida is not the ideal State like everyone wants us to believe it is.

This one was a Category 4 when it git land in Florida. I thought they said one the news this was the worst hurricane on record.

Hurricane Ian is going to be the worst hurricane that caused damage in Florida, due to its huge storm surge and the fact that it affected most of the state, from southwest to northeast., and that it lasted so long over Florida. Other hurricanes, though some were more intense cat-5s, were more localized, had less storm surge and were short-lived.

This year? I think your numbers are a bit off... Expected net migration for 2022 is 352,301 people. 200,000-400,000 new residents per year is pretty normal in Florida. We are the fastest growing state in the nation. That out of the way, when you live in concrete houses with hurricane ties and impact windows/hurricane shutters it's really not a big deal most of the time unless you right on the water. A lot of homes are also built up on little mounds/hills to avoid flooding... I've lived with hurricanes my entire life. I’ve never had to make an insurance claim. My parents who lived here their entire lives never had to make an insurance claim. My grandmother that lived in Key West in a wooden house her entire life only had to make one insurance claim in 96 years. My Great Grandfather who lived on the beach however, did have to hold on to palm tree while the ocean swallowed his house and took it out to sea in one of the worst hurricanes to ever hit the state. He survived though.

Personally, I go outside in category 3 storms and walk around. When I was a kid I use to swim across the intracoastal waterway to go surfing in category 1 and 2 hurricanes when they closed the bridges to the barrier islands because the waves are good. When you live here you are prepared for anything. We have camp stoves with propane, grills, coolers, generators, flashlights, candles, batteries, medical supplies, water, and a deep pantry always on hand just like people in northern climates have winter jackets, snow shovels, ice scrapers, and winter tires… Everything just stops for a couple of days when hurricanes come. You watch where it’s going to hit, if it’s going to hit you then you close your shutters, buy some snacks and beer, and maybe throw a hurricane party and hang out with family and friends. When the storm passes you go outside… Typically everyone comes together as a community to clear the streets of all fall branches and debris. The electric company comes out in full force and works like dogs, national/state guard deploy to give humanitarian assistance to people that need it. Sometimes you lose power for a few days to a a few weeks, but most services are up within a couple of days. That is unless you live in some Democrat commie hell hole and get hit by a Category 5. Then you get your typical Democrat looting and violence. Miami was bad during Andrew. Decent people had to carry out armed patrols of their streets to keep out the degenerates.

Category 4 and 5 are bad and I typically will get the hell out the way and go on a vacation for several days if they are coming directly for my city, but even if a strong category 5 hits a city that is like 45 minute drive from home, it will tend to do nothing to you if you are that far away. The strongest winds are concentrated near the eye wall, so you have to watch it and see where it’s really going. Every once in a while it’s your turn... The big deal with Hurricane Ian is that it might ride the entire Western coast sitting just off shore in the warm gulf waters strengthening and driving storm surge inland and then stall over Tampa and sit there for a while… The north eastern side of the storm tends to be the worst. It’s where you will see the most tornadoes spin off. Thus if you live on the west coast of Florida, that’s pretty bad for you. A lot of areas will be very badly impacted by a 10 foot storm surge. I know someone that lives by the water on the west coast that might have their house flooded. I hope for the best for them, but shit happens some times. Where I live it will most likely just be a windy rainy day. I don’t even think I have to close my hurricane shutters, but I’ll keep an eye on it and if it turns I will move fast and get things done. I can already see the outer bands spinning in the sky outside...

There are parts of Florida that routinely get hit by hurricanes BUT. . . hurricanes are monitored by the National Hurricane Center, their paths are projected, and I know 6-7 days before it arrives if I am in the target zone. People who get hit by tornadoes have no such warning.

Also, parts of Florida are very suspectible to hurricanes and other parts are not. I live in Jacksonville and we rarely (perhaps once every 30 years) experience a direct strike by a hurricane. Even when we do, people who live more than five miles inland generally do not sustain any heavy damage unless they live in a flood-prone area. And our local electric utility does a great job in restoring service after storms.

For most of us, hurricanes are merely an excuse to have a party!

I was there for a month in Feb. / Mar. one year and it was great!! Temps were always in the 70's to the low 90's. I don't think I'd want to be there in hurricane season!
