Generally, I believe that if someone takes out a loan they are responsible for paying it back in full. Selfishly though if someone offers to relieve some of my student loan debt, I'm not going to turn it down. On an individual level, I would have $10,000 of my debt relieved. That does not erase my debt and trust me, I have paid far more than $10,000 in federal income taxes throughout my career, and I'm only 28 years old. I don't make a ton of money but I just filed my taxes and in 2022 alone I paid the federal government over $7,000 and I barely got a refund. So... I don't feel strongly about the issue but I honestly wouldn't be upset if the loan forgiveness plan was allowed to proceed.

No, these people made a promise to pay the money back. It's not my fault that they majored in Gender studies instead of Computer Science and cannot find a good paying job when they got out.

Why not bail out people that have car loans? Why not pay off everyone's home mortgage? The government is supposed to take care of all the people not just a select few.

And what about the people who were conscientious and did not take out loans? They get screwed because they showed good fiscal responsibility?

No, make them pay what they owe. They did not learn anything in college, maybe this will be a good lesson for them going forward.

Honestly, I don’t know. The only way I can see it being a good thing is if everyone, including those with debts already paid off, received $10-20k. But more than that, I would love to see cheaper tuition for future generations. And better discussions about life in general.

I wish I had known that my degree was not as useful as I originally thought, that someone would have told me there were other options besides university. I wish I hadn’t been pushed into going to university straight out of high school when I still didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life.

I do not support his debt transfer plan from the rich to the poor. As those who have college degrees will make far more in their lives than those who did not go.

The ONLY way I could support it is, if he gave all citizens 10k and those with student loans have it auto apply to theirs.

If that is not affordable, then the entire plan is not. I am very much against any government program that is not open to EVERYONE. There is far too many that discriminate as it is. Make too much money, sorry they'll discriminate against you.

Forgiving student loans is grossly unfair to the thousands of students who paid off their loans. I believe it is also unconstitutional... the federal government is entitled to get paid back, so by forgiving the loans is essentially spending federal money without the approval of Congress, which clearly violates the Constitution. Only Congress (the Senate in particular) can spend money.

And why are the vast majority of these loans taken out by Middle Class Students, not Working Class Students? Could it be that the Working Class Students already know that everything has a cost attached, know how to budget and have decided to minimise the amount of debt they incur at college/university?

Not really. If it's approved, I'll take it but I'm not hurt if it's not approved. I'd qualify for the full twenty thousand and it would take away most of my debt. However, I made a promise and I'd rather pay it back myself.

I paid my debts off through hard work and discipline. Sometimes I made 2 or 3 payments in one month.

Since I paid my own debts, everyone else should pay their own debts. I've never not paid a legal debt that was my own fault.

I support it. Idc about the past, students shouldn't have to take out loans to get education. If not make tuition lower then fine, pay off the loans. Maybe people will get mad enuf to ask why can't the entire country's budget afford to pay off a very small percentage of loans?
