It's becoming a common occurrence. Another mass shooting. Gun lovers argue that they have a right to have such weapons and trying to remove them from society is impossible.
It's apparent that the status quo isn't working.
How do we go about making the necessary changes?
I have a direct relative who was a victim in a mass shooting and I still believe your idea of “banning firearms” is completely asinine.
My relative happened to be in a so called “gun free zone” when this incident happened. He is a gun owner himself. However do you think the psycho who shot him really gave a crap about “gun laws”. My relative obeyed the law and guess who had no means of protecting himself?
I am just fed up with the adolescent knee jerk stupidity I hear from people (usually leftists) about how to “solve” this problem. There are over 300 million guns in the United States. If you ban all firearms then only law abiding and sane people will be disarmed. Criminals and/or psychos will always find a way to do harm with the right motivation. Mass shooters are ready to die when they hit the brink.

The answer to reducing gun violence is much more complicated. I am all for common sense laws that identity and effectively prevent the wrong kind people from owning guns. But we have a much deeper cultural issue going on here and it has to do with the negative side effects of our digitized “one up” society.
People are becoming increasingly isolated and losing physical connection to their communities. Depression is up, suicide attempts are up, less and less people are getting married and/or having kids. Less people are finding true meaning in their lives.
The approach to reducing gun violence (and violence in general) is multi-faceted and requires f’ing effort from the silent majority. Quit thinking that if you “ban all firearms” that will magically solve everything.
At 57 you should know better. You should be able to take a look around and realize what modern society is doing to people in the first place. That takes much more effort and deeper thinking. But I somehow doubt you are capable of that.

Instead of trying to talk about that, how about NOW is the time to talk about fixing society and why people are doing this.
The wild west when guns were free to everyone without a background check was not even close to this crazy.
Society is screwed up, are you and other liberals ready to talk about fixing society. What has changed in the last 50 to a 100 years that is causing this?
Then finding and creating a plan of action to address it that increases access to firearms and removes background checks and makes it easy to own guns.
That is really what we need to start talking about.
I personally don't care HOW many people get killed in mass shootings, it could be a million a year, don't touch gun rights, expand them but instead focus on the problem.
I'm okay with that, rights are more important than lives.

Gun control supporters lack facts and the ability to reason. They merely react emotionally to media propaganda and are motivated by political ideology.
Firearm related homicides (let's call them gun deaths) hoovered under 16,000 for years. They started to climb during the induced covid hysteria and mandates. They are currently around 21,000.
21,000 out of 320,000,000 citizens and a total of 450,000,000 people in the country at any one time.
If 21,000 deaths sounds like a lot, put it in perspective by looking at other causes of death. 40,000 people die from accidental falls and 40,000 die from accidental poisonings. Where is the hue and cry over those numbers? 40,000 people die from motor vehicle accidents, despite all the safety measures and laws. Does anyone think we can eliminate motor vehicles deaths? Does anyone hesitate to get in a car?
What about opioid deaths? Deaths from pharmaceuticals? 250,000 preventable hospital fatalities?
Around 2,800,000 people die annually in the U. S. from all cases. Cancer and heart disease top the list. How many of those are preventable?
The FBI says that 80% of firearm homicides are gang related. That means that, currently, there are around 4,000 non-gang related firearm homicides. There are 10x more deaths from accidental falls, poisonings and motor vehicle accidents.
Oh, but gun deaths are an emergency! We HAVE to do SOMETHING! Fuck the Bill of Rights that lists a few rights that are considered to be self-evident and unalienable.
Have cities with the strongest gun control laws seen a decrease in gun violence? No. In fact, they are the most unsafe places in the U. S.
The fact is, the goal of the "gun control lobby" is to disarm citizens. Period. It has nothing to do with saving lives.
How does the gun control lobby propose to disarm criminals and gangs?

Those are national organizations and don't include all of the state and local organizations that are supported and funded by citizens of all walks of life to preserve their rights to self defense, hunting, and recreation.
How many of the well over 80 million honest gun owners are responsible for the 4,000 or so criminal acts committed with guns? Why do they get blamed when some nut job goes on a rampage?
The problem with gun control supporters is, they don't care about the rights of others. They can't understand why people are loathe to hand over the rights that they already have, especially when doing so would not accomplish the proposed goal of saving lives and making society safer.
And are we really supposed to believe that the government or ultra-wealthy elites are motivated concern for the lives of mere peons?

If you want effective, common sense "gun control" in the United States, then form a commission consisting of the National Rifle Association, The Second Amendment Foundation, Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, Gun Owners of America, National Association for Gun Rights, & the Constitutional Rights PAC, along with one member from each political party (Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Tea Party, etc.) to draft the common sense legislation needed to curtail gun violence and Congress to pass it without changes or amendments.

Therefore if you have a gun in the house it's far more likely to be used to kill you than an attacker.

As @Aerissa_Jade pointed out, it is a people problem, and a modern one at that. My grandparents had gun clubs in their schools and there were no mass shootings. Many stores sold firearms, no back ground checks, and no mass shootings.
It is also hard to see how removing the rights and disarming law-abiding citizens is going to stop criminals.

As you see guns are used mostly to committ suicide or murder, neither of which requires a gun. For instance in the uk the most common method of suicide is rope and knives for murder yet neither require a licence. So you are more likely to die of the rope of knife in your own home in the uk.
