Taylor Swift is the world's youngest female billionaire. Her ERA's tour is slated to gross more than US$1 billion.
Is her choice as TIME's Person of the Year 2023 a good one?
I admit, I do cannot fathom this choice at all. I suppose, as Prince would say, this is a Sign O the Times.
Swift appears to be a pleasant enough person who gives to charitable causes to some extent, and she sings well enough. But Person of the Year is supposed to be reserved for all-around greatness, isn't it?
Swift seems to be the Madonna of the 2020s. She's "popular" to the nth degree. She makes tons of money and is dating a hot football star. She's physically attractive. But extremely talented? Incredibly giving of her time and money? Ah well...
Time states that her concerts have revitalized the US economy. So there's THAT.
BUT, person of the year has got to do more than be the most-streamed singer and a billionaire. There's been billionaires as Person of the Year, but they've usually done more than filled a popularity poll. Swift isn't an Elon Musk, Zuckerberg or Bezos. She's no groundbreaking president of the United States or Russia.
She IS a phenomenon. She rates a great article and study in Time, Newsweek, Fortune, or Wired. But she's too unaccomplished, untalented and lacks a track record for such an accolade.
Anyone can make lots of money for awhile as a pop star. She's not a great singer, songwriter or dancer. She's blandly attractive. It was a misstep compared to former P of the Years.
“But Person of the Year is supposed to be reserved for all-around greatness, isn't it?”
No. It’s “a person, a group, idea, or object that "for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year"
One can agree or disagree with this years selection, but it’s got nothing to do with ones “greatness.”
@RainbowMarinade WEll, looking back on the past 25 years of persons of the years, or groups of people... most appeared to be a little more all-arounds than Swift. "Done the most" to influence events of the year? Influential, sure. Done the MOST. Nah. I do like the "for better or worse" part... It's amusing...
@Screenwriter
Again, you can agree or disagree with the choice.
I was only responding to “Person of the Year is supposed to be reserved for all-around greatness, isn't it?” because no. It isn’t supposed to be reserved for all-around greatness.
I don't really understand her fame... she's good but i don't understand her chart positions and frequencies either... far as the beatles john lennon quote goes he said that to a fan magazine that was picked up in the states and rewritten... if you were there in 1966 john lennon was just oberving jesus christ and christianity... and he said the beatles were bigger than christ... which isn't saying they were bigger by any means meaning in popularity... if you push the clock to 2024 almost 1/2 of elite universities supported hamas... which isn't exactly anything to do with jesus but remember he was a jew... tells you something where morals have gone.
I mean, I’m not sure how broad the criteria are for what constitutes worthiness for “Person Of The Year”, but if they’re loose enough to include entertainers, then Taylor is hard to argue with. My little cousins saw her tour this year and were blown away by it. I don’t quite get all the hype around her music, I guess I’m not the target demo, but she’s definitely talented and seems like a reasonably decent person, so as long as no one cured cancer this year and I just missed the headlines, I have no objection to it.
I’ve seen that picture maybe a dozen times and I JUST noticed the cat. Thought she had some goofy high-fashion fur collar on her leotard😂🤦♂️
There's no denying her influence on society (at least in North America) over the past year. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't know who she is and at least some of her music. Her tour broke so many records, and those tickets were a very hot commodity. Its not just her music, its not just her looks, its not just her personality- she's got a lot going for her.
Time's person of the year is rarely someone like Mother Teresa. If you look at their past selections, this is right in line with them.

Technically yes if they're now going to include major artists, and I am a fan of her music, just not necessarily of her. BUT the fact that in the past it's been people like Zelensky and Ebola doctors and now Taylor Swift just because a certain demography is giving her worldwide fame and wealth? Doesn't sit right with me - I think Person of the Year should be someone who actually DOES good or something worthwhile that's not to do with simply money
This was quoted as most important. Think it's off tho.
As far as I know, she is the only artist ever to have ALL the top 10 spot on the pop charts. Even the Beatles never did that. I'm not a big fan of her music, but if it passes off Kanye West, it can't be all ban.
Time often picks politicians, but there are none of particular note at the moment. Who would they pick? Orange Jesus?
good point a good achievement but... that isn't the idea of influence i suspect a different agenda.
It seems like an act of desperation from the multimedia conglomerate. She's a well loved icon. There's no risk in choosing her. She's not controversial and makes a sexy, crotch-y cover photo. Is she really that skinny?
We love Taylor. But she isn't changing the world.
I respect her right to create her own choices but I think they should have given the number one spot to an entertainer that provides people with free entertainment cause most people can’t afford to go to her concert. Of course everyone needs to eat but most musicians are free on YouTube and affordable to see at their concerts.
Better than a lot of other stars and just does a basic show... I appreciate that.
As good as any other can think of, but that's kinda sad. We need more Saints.
Maybe she's rumplestiltskin... talented, turns spoiled relationships into gold?
Let me seeeeeee...
Who scribbles down texts for some ''magazine''?
What kinds of ''magazines'' employ scribblers, and for what purpose?
...
Aaaaah! - for selling their ''magazine'', it is.
Does it then matter who they select to be ''special''?
They disqualified themselves when they put Hitler on the cover. They backpedaled on it saying it was a condemnation but I don't buy that. To much parallels in what they currently approve in the world for me to believe that.
So her management team deserves accolades for the way in which they have promoted her and created a money machine, but. . . what has she personally accomplished that many other musicians haven't accomplished?
Salient point , and Bono, who was part of a Time group, was a far better fit. She hasn't done a concert to finance a cause. I don't think her songbook will survive 50 years. She'll have nicks on the charts, sure. Phenomena, she is. Phenomenal? She isn't.
I think we could have done better. Why all the hype about Taylor Swift these days? I don't even think I'd recognize her voice on the radio. I guess she must be a good singer, but too much attention on her, must be for publicity?
She deserves it.
As Time magazine said on the Today show when making the announcement (paraphrasing here): "She's like the weather. She's everywhere and everyone knows who she is and can talk about her."
I think it's messed up that the Soros family tried to rip her off.
Good luck democrats... you eat your own.
It underlines how ridiculous Time magazine has become. It was pathetic that they scrapped the "Man" and "Woman" categories to be "inclusive". This is just an extension of that.
if so why can't "any actor" for example p. brosnan be "inclusive" for all ethnicity included as actors in a movie?
she's talented but overrated. And her songs have not caught my attention lately. Her last good album was 1989
I kept wondering why people mentioned a cat. Legit never noticed it til now. Thought she was dressed as Black Cat from Marvel lmao
I really don't think about it at all. She maybe talented at what she does, but she truly brings not worth willing to sociality.
Taylor Swift is a very talented person and she was a good choice. After all, she too has Scottish fold cats. What's not to like?
I was surprised to see that Time Magazine was still around. I guess Taylor Swift is a good choice.
True. Its a big turn on for guys. I remember telling my boyfriend how I lost my virginity with another girl, I was giving him a hanjob half way through the story and within 2 minutes he'd cum. On the other hand a bisexual male ex I dated was telling me about the first time he got railed in the ass by a guy, big turn off. I couldn't see him as a man after that.
When Taylor has a concert it brings in more money then the super bowl. she's riding the wave of success right now
Why does any of this matter to anyone?
I don’t really think anything of it. Whatever. They have to put someone on the cover. She’s making a disgusting amount of money just for singing and dancing. That’s life. Capitalism.
I don't understand what makes her the "person of the year" exactly? Does she donate half her money or something? She was spoiled all her life too.
About the same as I think of time's person of the year 1938
She was very important this year.
Her fans were the decisive vote for the Golden Boy award. Because of them it was won by Jude Bellingham and not Alejandro Balde.
She did good. We finally get a good female singer up there that has good moral values, Christian person.
if you enjoy her songs, listen to her album loved.
I don't really care about rich or famous people.
While I don't know if I've ever actually heard on of her songs, there's no denying the fact that she is an amazingly successful person and a self-made woman. I think it totally makes sense.
She's one of the few people who had a good year so might as well.
I think I would like to be her main man at least for a little while until I get paid you know what I'm saying.🤣
Hail to the swiftness who is the real reasons she's as big of a hit as she is. They can make or break someone as they've proven.
Hail to the swifties that know the real her.
I think conservatives should redirect their anger elsewhere
not anger... just complaint.
She should have to sleep with all of us so she can keep getting ideas for songs.
More power to her sure why not go for it earn as much as you can👍
I think Zelensky should be person of the year every year.
I don't know anything about Taylor Swift lol can't even name a song of hers
The queen
You forgot about the cat.
🤔
Interesting.
Guess it's capitalism? 😁👌🏻
Yes, I love her :)
🤷🏻♀️ I guess it beats a politician.
At least she is a real woman.
Did you see where they put kim kardashian as the mens mag? Lmao. Times are crazy
Good God yeah definitely crazy
She works hard and deserves it.
All hail!
Thecat should have been Time person of the year.
Overrated af
Yes!
yawn.
Andrew Tate?
now HE was influential and caused debates
@strateguy632 His message can not be ignored. However if an average 5 foot 7 no-car-driving neckbeard said the same things, nobody would have caught on. It took a kickboxing 6 foot Bugatti Chiron driver to relay it (i'm just exaggerating with this one)
Who cares
(*yawn*) oh, ya?
Disgrace
