What was the worst natural disaster you ever had to endure (wildfire images from L. A.)?

Question

Currently in LA the fires in Pacific palisades and Pasadena are still raging. looks apocalyptic out there right now.

Thankfully im on the opposite side of the areas so im pretty safe, but i can smell the ashes and smoke from here.

Oh i also lived through the northridge quake of 1994. that was pretty bad too.

The flood of 1993. I have family in Missouri who's house flooded when the Mississippi broke its banks. When we returned home to discover a foot of water in our basement. My bedroom was down there so I lost all of my belongings. I grew up in that house only to discover years later that the flood had caused a massive amount of black mold in the walls. The new owners remolded the basement in 2010 and discovered all the mold. My family all suffered a sudden onset of illnesses after 93 that lasted years. Now we know why.

I've been within a couple of miles of a Tornado many times. Been lucky in that regard as I know multiple people who's Farms were completely destroyed.

Flooding. I grew up in Grand Forks, ND, and there was a record flood in 1997 that caused the evacuation of the entire city. Our house had water in the finished basement, topping out at around 6" below the ceiling joists, as well as in the garage. My dad's business (a greenhouse/nursery) had between 2 and 3' of water throughout. My family was out of our house for 2 months, and I finished the school year at my grandparents house.

During the flood, 11 buildings downtown burned. Despite all the floodwaters there wasn't any water pressure in the hydrants since the treatment plant was inundated. They ended up using forest service planes to fight the fire.

We occasionally get a few roads closed to flooding and it can get a little blowy at times but not what you'd call a natural disaster. Last big earthquake was 4.6 back in 2018 but went largely unnoticed by most people. Only fatality was in the earthquake of 1940 which made a woman fall down the stairs. We did have a mini heatwave a couple of years ago and we lost a bit grass to a small fire.

We’ve had worse in our city but I was not around it. Snow.

This Thanksgiving we got over three feet in a couple days. That was nothing compared to a Christmas when I was younger. We got something like 5+ feet in 36 hours if I remember correctly.

I've never had to endure one. Switzerland is very safe when it comes to natural disasters and also in other ways. We have no oceans no tornados or hurricanes. Most natural disasters here are gonna be mountain related, like mudslides, avalanches, rockfalls, floods that's it. And you're not gonna experience these unless you're either seeking danger and you're inexperienced or you're really unlucky and at the wrong place at the wrong time. The worst I've experienced was a minor earthquake. I was still young and we were in the black forrest which is very close to Basel and there was a earthquake in the middle of the night. But it was not dangerous. You could feel it and some things hanging on the wall were moving back and forth but that was it. The strongest earthquakes there are usally around 4 on the richter scale which is nothing major.

Easy. Superstorm Sandy when NYC was under water and MAGA chucklefucks voted "NO" against federal aid. These same spineless GOP douchenozzles voted themselves PLENTY of aid for militarizing rural police forces after 9/11 though. Ya know, cuz Al Queda was targeting towns with no traffic lights...

Hurricane Sandy. Though there was another storm and that caused similar distress with my family…. Roads blocked, heard stories of people losing their house from the carnage, and power knocked out for a week. Trees down, downed wires, flooding, etc. The winds & lightning was terrifying.

- Saw the aftermath of Haiti hurricane when we went on a short term mission trip there.
- Got caught in hurricane Andrew, 1992. Trip from hell - never go on a Disney cruise (for various other reasons, but the hurricane didn't help).

The worst I've been through is several tornados, and some have been extremely close calls. I'm still here, though. 🤷‍♂️
