Hegseth says public can watch Fort Hood shooter's execution

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday that the public will be able to watch the execution of the Fort Hood shooter by firing squad.

Why it matters: The U. S. hasn't held a public execution in 90 years, and Hegseth's remarks raise questions about how the military would allow people to watch.

Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people in the 2009 shooting, is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on Dec. 3 at Fort Hood, near Killeen, Texas.
What they're saying: Hegseth told Real America's Voice Thursday that Hasan is "gonna get a firing squad of soldiers. As it should be."

by the way someone i watch regularly brought up a good point that this kind of thing will not reduce crime but may in fact increase it because we are signaling to the utterly depraved people in our country that you get to enjoy the mass notoriety before you get executed publicly which one of if not the main reason they do what they do. for the notoriety and fame. No I won’t be watching it and no I don’t support violence.

This isn’t a movie or tv show plot, this is reality.
Criminals know what happens to them when they commit crimes, I don’t think we need to have a firing squad. And those willing to celebrate this as some victory are messed up individuals who love violence and welcome it with open arms against those they despise.

The guy in particular deserves death, no one is disputing that. It is about public execution treating this as a piece of entertainment or political theatre and it can be seen by anyone which is disgusting.

“No cruel and unusual punishments.” That’s why we removed public executions.
This is a step in the wrong direction.

No, I don't think I would watch it. I understand wanting justice for the victims and their families, but watching someone being executed live is a bit too much for me. I’d rather remember the victims and the lives that were lost than sit and watch someone die. I can understand why people are curious, though 🤔
