Football came around because rugby was considered too violent for American colleges, so they added pads and constant pauses (that's why I can't watch football--it's too stop and go), and it spread from there. They eventually lifted the ban on rugby, but football will never die out.
As much as football irritates me because of the constant stopping, a lot of the guys in my family played football, so I'm obligated to defend it. And I have to agree with Tatiahna--rugby is just about the gayest thing I've ever seen. I actually learned about rugby from the Yale rugby team (which is the school where football started, by the way), and it just looked like a big man-on-man orgy.
Not to put down the sport at all. I have a lot of respect for guys who play rugby; it's definitely not for everyone.

I'm sorry but rugby is the gayest sport ever created.
I'm an American girl but I've lived in England for 4 years.
I enjoy watching American Football on tv WAY more than I do rugby
I mean with rugby it's just a bunch of gay men grabbing each other's @sses and it's not very nice
But with American football yeah it isn't as tough but at least they aren't touching each other everywhere.
I mean watching rugby is like watching the free gay prn channel. I don't see how so many men play it and don't find it gay
I'm neither a football nor a rugby fan (although I did play some rugby years ago) and I do agree with you. Rugby is a much more rugged game.
I do watch the superbowl (American) and the grey cup (Canadian) and all these time outs and stoppages and changing defensive and offensive lines slows the game up. I'm there for the beer and food.
I concur. What's the fun in watching a sport where the point is to hurt people but they are wearing a bunch of pads. Australian football is way more entertaining.
Oh yeah. I'm a "Yank".
And motorsports guys are exempt from being babies with pads and helmets. haha
In America football dominates all other sports next in line would be basketball then prob baseball, we have rugby and soccer but in America we don't pay attention to that. It's a cultural thing man, just like soccer is huge in other countries but not in America.

I believe rugby and football comes from a same tree of the family. I guess the differences is the rules and pads. like what you've said. but both very exciting. Especially if you ever watched 4th quarter 1:00 minute hurrdles. man. it could make your palm sweat sometimes. God Bless.
no wait rugby isn't the gayest sport ever created I take that back. curling is the gayest sport ever created but that's another story.
i am probably one of the only people at my school who doesn't like football or any other sports
