How did you discover it?
And how did you change your life after discovering it?
Rosacea
When my cheeks (face!) stayed red.
- I tried to make sure I was in 16 degree (celcius) rooms at all times possible
- Didn't drink hot drinks
- Avoided things containing alcohol
- Avoided the sun and all forms of heat
- Stayed away from spicy foods
- Limited physical activities
- Avoided windy conitions (including fans)
Somewhere along the line I was sick everyday and my health was getting worse.
Discovered I had a lot of allergies.
- Began to cut out the foods I was reacting to
- Had 2 courses of desensitization shots for allergies not related to food
- Found out that it worked differently to how it was supposed to, it lessened the effects the allergies gave me (food and other) although I reacted every single day
- Took antihistamines everyday
- Somewhere along the line I started eating those foods again because the reaction was bareable
- Did a little bit of research
- Started taking vit B and zinc (it helped my skin)
- Made a huge effort to remove all stress from my life, even if that meant doing nothing
Discovery? Not everything is textbook (although I already knew that before any of this), rosacea is not a chronic disease that stays all your life and only gets worse as you get older. *I do not have it anymore, yay*. And there are known causes (why it develops). Allergies came from stress, as did the rosacea (which only added to that). If anyone has doubts, no, I'm not going to prove it to you.
Wow I'm pretty sleepy, I can't stay awake for 10 min without falling asleep, let alone all the dizziness I've been feeling and the lack of energy so much so that I can't even take a shower without feeling like I'm going to faint.
Anemia
- Iron & vit C tablets.
Wow, the allergy stuff sounds just like me! I'm allergic to so many foods and also to virtually every airborne thing imaginable. It makes me feel so bad so often. I've thought hard about the allergy shots, but I'm kind of unsure of how I'll react to them. I have so many negative reactions to things and develop new allergies to things quickly. Stress really causes the allergies to become much much worse. I get very sick. I manage the best I can, but am always looking for things to try.
The shots were so effective for me, I would've had more if it had not been for the cost (it really is worth it though). What do you know about the desensitization shots? How are you managing with the foods/diet?
Since you mentioned stress I'm pretty sure those shots would benefit you in a similar way that it did to me. Lessen the overall stress from the immune reactions > lowering your stress even more > lowering your "toxic" reaction to foods you're already allergic to and possibly stopping
the occurance of new allergies! :P
What kinds of sick are you talking about?
What was it?
Seizures
How did I discover it?
I always knew something was different. The feeling before the seizure (the aura) wasn't anything new to me by the time I actually started having seizures. I didn't actual step out of denial about it until just recently when I became certified as an EMD for work. In that, we have scripted instructions to direct people over the phone how to take care of a person having a seizure. I discovered an axiom in the additional info card that described focal seizures and that prompted me to do more research.
I didn't know if I had tourettes or epilepsy or what - all I knew was that I'd get that jittery feeling and then I'd start twitching.
How have I changed my life?
I haven't, for the most part. If anything, I hide it more than I used to. I don't want to get drugged up for something that isn't having a huge, adverse effect on my daily life. I don't want to lose my job when it isn't affected by my condition.
Mitral valve prolapse and aorta valve regurgitation.
They both allow some of the blood that was just pumped out of the heart's main pumping chamber to leak back into it. As a result, you may feel fatigued and short of breath.
Doctors found it through echo cardiogram (ultrasound), and an MRI scans.
Found it when I was 14, it had no effect on me, then around 18 it was a little worse so I was limited to lifting 50lbs. I was into weights so this was sh*tty, then a recent scan about a year ago showed that it was severe leakage and I was not allowed to do any kind of weight lifting so I'm now underweight again, and they where considering heart operation.
I said F*** THAT. I was way to scared of that. I started researching for hours daily. For a few months I stopped all processed foods, only ate fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, some fish, water. I started taking about 10 different vitamins every day specifically for the heart, exercising. I had another MRI a few months ago, and my heart IMPROVED. Docs where pretty amazed. So I am continuing to do what I've learned and will see again in a few months what the next MRI shows. I think it will show even more improvement. I hope so, for my sake, and because I really want to help other people cure their heart problems naturally.
Secondly I had anxiety and OCD. I did research on alternative methods for that to and overcame it. It was horrible for a couple years, effected my eating, totally f***ed over my social life because I was afraid to go out with friends and just talking to people made me anxious, but I overcame it in a couple months.
How did you overcome anxiety and OCD?
I'm still finishing up the process. I have been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder known as Gaucher Disease. In this disease, the body doesn't produce enough of an enzyme responsible for breaking down lipid in the body, so the lipid manifests inside cells and organs, inflaming and then destroying them. It affects all major organ systems and is chronic.
My journey started when I was diagnosed with unexplained neutropenia (deficient neutrophils). Then, they found immunodeficiency, vitamin b12 deficiency, leukopenia (deficient white cells) thrombocytopenia (deficient platelets), Costochondritis, nodules in the liver, spleen and lungs, splenamegaly, physiologic distention of the gallbladder, non- herpatic mouth ulcers and a thickened bladder wall.
None of it made sense and we started testing for gaucher after the bone marrow biopsy. The only Treatment is a biweekly IV drip of a synthesized version of the enzyme lasting 1-2 hours for the rest of my life. It costs $200,000/year and 90-100% is covered by health insurance, but life insurance is denied. There is no cure.
The fatigue, pain and more have made me restructure my workouts, schedule and gave me a life changing look at my own mortality. I'm off to the hematologist yet again tomorrow.
The IV drip has a synthesized version of the deficient enzyme. That's the only medication and only treatment available.

When I was in the 2-3 grade my friends noticed white patch underneath my eye. Then they started appearing in other places I didn't get concerned because one my mom has this condition2 never not ticed how it progressed. Then we moved so I had tovmake new friends and they treated me differently that's when insecurities started. So we went to the doctors and he said I had vitiligo
He told me that there was no cure and that over time it would progress more and more till I was completely white.
Then a couple of years later they diagnosed me w a thyroid desease that my thyroid is under-active which would explain why I've been overweight most of my life. I've learned to accept how I. Am befall se there's always a reason for life obsticles and that's what brings people together and inspires people to do big things.
i have endometriosis and pelvic adhesive disease. I've had it since I was 10 but was diagnosed at 17. I had to drop out of high school and go into homeschooling because my periods were HORRIBLE. its impossible for me to work and stress only makes my symptoms worse. I will have it for life since there is no cure and I can't take hormones of any sort. I have to plan everything around my period and cut out certain things from my diet and daily use. I can't use regular shampoos, conditioners, soaps, detergents etc due to xenoestrogens which make it worse. whole lifestyle change
It was not a discovery, but a very damn painful revelation. 7 years ago some kind of a bug bit me while I was in the countryside during Midsummer and it transferred a disease, something similar to tick-borne encephalitis but it wasn't exactly that, I'm not sure and that doesn't really matter...
It gave me headaches from the f***ing depths of hell! I'm dead serious - it felt like something was drilling in my head!
But otherwise, except very high temperature, fever and overall sick feeling I was alright and back on my feet within 3 weeks.
...however - there was a symptom which remained.
I couldn't stand in direct sunlight or the headaches returned. The doctor even recommended me to wear a hat at all times, but it wasn't much of a help anyway.
Luckily that thing now is completely over, as this year I found out I can be in the sun again without anything bad happening, well it's been 7 years though, about the damn time I say!
What was it?
Genital Herpes
How did you discover it?
I had lost my virginity to my boyfriend and about a week later I thought I had cut myself shaving 'down there'. The pain got worse and it felt infected so I went to the doctor and was diagnosed.
How did you change your life after discovering it?
Over the last year I have started eating healthier, taking vitamins, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep. Keeping on track with these changes has greatly reduced the amount of breakouts I had from when I didn't monitor those things.
When I was 9 I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. Ever since then I have had to adapt and try to manage living with the disease.
It was discovered after months of testing, because it's one of those things that the symptoms are non-specific, so it could have been anything that's why it took so long for a diagnosis.
Even though it was diagnosed over a decade ago I still have to change things as my condition changes. More recently I had to increase the dosage in medication that I take.
Along with that came diet changes, because my body was off I had become really sensitive to salt and was bloating like crazy. So I had to majorly cut out salt and processed foods. Which kinda sucked!
1) Cancer, and 2) somewhat overeight. Caught the cancer early on and the weight I knew about.
Took care of the cancer through radiation and it never returned. Have been cancer free for 5 years.
Ended up seeing a nutritionist and started an exercise routine . Lost 45 pounds. Very different lifestyle now. It's all about health.
Obesity, but I've known about it for a while. Just haven't done a very good job with fixing it until now. I didn't have as much motivation, the other times I tried losing weight as I do now, even though I've had family members who've had various health conditions that were aggravated by being big. Although it would have been better if I'd lost the weight earlier, I'm still proud of myself for doing it now.
When I was about five years old I discovered to my utter horror that I was in fact dying, and only had roughly 75 years left to live. I've made the most of every day ever since.
man your comments always make me lol. and I thank you for that
75 years left? That many? That's half a century more than I've left. Lucky guy!
I did power lifting for 10 years, and one of the guys I was training with, had a heart attack and died, he was 47. I went to the doctor and long story short, I had huge blood pressure problem, at risk of having a stroke. ( which a cousin had at 34 this year )
I quick power lifting and took up bodybuilding, lost all the body fat, blood pressure down to the normal, so even though I was training 4 days a week, the way I was eating was literally killing me.
Not really a health condition, but rather a condition : ADD.
My mom thought I had NLD, so I was browsing the internet. I ended up on the wikipedia page of ADD and there I discovered all the symptoms apply to me.
No one had ever told me ADHD exists without the hyperactive part.
Oh that's though dude.. I have ADHD, Asbergers Syndrome, and dysleksia. Its hard.. To get to know something new.
What was it?
Diabetes.
How did you discover it?
Someone in my family have had it.
And how did you change your life after discovering it?
I changed my lifestyle mentally (reading more about this disease and it's complications to be able to help this person in future, so this helped me to decide my major in the university) and physically (Exercising, playing sports, eating the healthy food and avoiding the fast food) to avoid the risk of having it too. ^^
I was born with an Arrhythmia. When I was younger and had all my resting EKG's it was fine, now having stress ones done, its more severe than they thought. I just have to be careful on how intense I push it all the time. It's just strange because I'm the only one in my family with any sort of heart stuff.
I have a slightly crooked spine. It's made lifting weights or hardcore exercising a bit of a problem for me. I do a lot of yoga and stretching to help contemplate.
Yes went to a specialist my whole life for my bladder when finally they told me I had to use catheters they are annoying and time consuming also a little painful
i am in high school and I have to leave class three times a day for ten min to cath.
I found I had a bone tumor about 2 years ago. I found it because I weighed too much to do pushups without it hurting my arm. I lost weight after and am still on that journey.
well I looked at a picture of myself, and I looked in the mirror and said damn iam fat! lol so I started eating better and exercising. 30 pds later iam still working on it
Well when I found out that my blood pressure was high I decided I had to make major lifestyle changes and changed my diet and exercised. Since then it has gone down a lot but I still have a ton of weight to loose.
Indeed :-#
My doctor missed it for years, then he had the hunch.
what is it?
It has been operated on , 35 years ago. (with success, happily)
...and the condition was?
as I wrote, it is the past now.
Looked at myself. Thought I was thick. I developed Anorexia. But after a while I started to get to know to how to stay healthy. And now I'm the strongest and fastest guy in school ;D
I was fat. I looked in a mirror. I'm dieting and working out.
