Why is Egypt considered middle east, even though it's in Africa?

They consider Egypt to be part of the middle east, but, it's in Africa, no other middle east country is in africa

  • Yes, it's part of the Middle East. Just because the continent it sits within is Africa doesn't mean there is only a border between that and Asia to make something Middle Eastern.

To further explain the region, this is from: http://www.britannica.com/place/Middle-East

"The change in usage began to evolve prior to World War II and tended to be confirmed during that war, when the term Middle East was given to the British military command in Egypt. By the mid-20th century a common definition of the Middle East encompassed the states or territories of Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, and the various states and territories of Arabia proper (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, and the Trucial States, or Trucial Oman [now United Arab Emirates])."

  • Traditional definition of the Middle East

Traditionally included within the Middle East are Iran (Persia), Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, and Egypt. In terms of modern-day countries, these are:

Bahrain Cyprus Egypt Iran Iraq Israel Jordan Kuwait Lebanon Oman Palestine Qatar Saudi Arabia Syria Turkey[19] United Arab Emirates Yemen

  • If I had to guess, I would say because ethnically, a lot of Egyptians are similar to other Middle Eastern people. The Egyptian culture is also more similar to Middle Eastern cultures as opposed to other African cultures.

  • I think it is because they speak Arabic like most of the middle east and also because they look like the people who grow up in the middle east. They don't look like most Africans since most Africans have rounder heads and very dark skin.

  • Its considered to one of the greatest civilizations ever and the powers that be don't want it to consider it African and/or Black, because according to a lot of people, Africans, especially Black ones, are not capable of anything great.

  • Same reason they refuse to entertain that the original Egyptians where black. NOTHING GREAT WILL EVER COME FROM AFRICA or BLACK people

    • Hmmm. :/

    • The population of Egypt is basically the same now as it was in ancient times. The people have never been slaughtered and replaced, only the rulers changed. Read articles on the genetic studies which have been done on Egyptian mummies. " NRY frequency distributions of the modern Egyptian population appear to be much more similar to those of the Middle East than to any Sub-Saharan African or European population, suggesting a much larger Middle Eastern genetic component"

    • Genetic analysis of the origin of ancient Egyptian DNA is 14% sub-Saharan African, as compared to the 'black' population of America which is nearly 30% European DNA. So if the Ancient Egyptians were 'black' and Americans blacks are twice as 'white' as the Egyptians were 'black' what does that make American 'blacks'?

  • Sahara desert is a barrier and so the people are closer ethnically and culturally to the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern peoples than sub-Saharan African ones.
