Is it normal for a guy to hyperventilate when his girlfriend breaks up with him?

It means he was genuinely shocked.

The first time I was broken up with was after a 7 year relationship. Of course I cried, but I was hyperventilating for an hour or so and couldn't stop. The breakup was unexpected.

Every breakup I've had after that was expected and not a surprise. I did not hyperventilate on any subsequent breakups

It probably means she was the girl of his live, the person who meant everything to him.
He got into panic when she told him, and there's not much between that and hyperventilating :-)
